For some context, I am not an MP student but was involved in a 1-week group project where I took on a post-production role. I was not meant to be involved in the shoot but oversaw the project. I noticed a lot of MP students were struggling to get adequate footage and material for the project (at no fault of their own). Making a film in 1 week is hard enough, but I realised no one had the proper materials to get what they wanted out of the brief given to them. For example, we were allocated roles for the project yet not only the cinematographer was working on the storyboard but 3 other people simultaneously working on different ones. Furthermore, when I asked if anyone was going to make a shotlist for the shoot day I was told that no one knew what that actually was. Furthermore, no one knows how to use a clapper board, or actually knows what room tone is, or how to write a basic script.

I just want to say that I am not being judgemental or blaming them for anything. I am just upset on their behalf because they haven't been given the proper tools to carry out an industry standard shoot day which causes a lot of stress.

I can understand not wanting to limit creativity, but I think everyone is really struggling without being taught the proper skills. And it just makes me think, what am I missing out on in my chosen discipline?

I hope I have articulated this concern correctly but I think it is a big issue.

Ways that this can be tackled is perhaps shadowing an actual uni students shoot day, or teaching them about individual roles in the industry.

Be taught how to structure a script, the correct pre-production planning, maybe some competitive pitches for a role to replicate industry standard practices, getting help from higher uni students or visitors for individual film roles.
