         <description><![CDATA[<div>Feudalism - A system developed during the Middle Ages when royal governments were no longer able to defend their subjects. Nobles offered land in return for service.<br>- Fiefs: Estates that Lords divided their lands into.<br>- Knight's Ethic Code: Honesty, fairness in battle, loyalty, &amp; proper treatment of women.<br>- Proper Treatment of Women: "Ladies first", open doors for women, walk on outside of sidewalk, etc.<br>- Manorial System: An economic system in the Middle Ages that was built around large estates called manors; included a village and the land surrounding it.<br>- Serfs: Peasants who lived and worked on the lord's manor.<br>- Freemen: Skilled workers who paid rent to nobles and could leave the manor. (ex: Blacksmiths and workers)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- Feudalism only occurs when the central gov. is weakened.<br>- The Feudal Contract: Unwritten rules that determined the relationship between a lord and his vassal.<br>- Vassals to Lords: Military Service (usually about 40 days per year), Loyalty<br>- Lords to Vassals: Land<br>- Fiefs were given to vassals<br>- People were granted land in return for loyalty and/or military service<br>- All nobles were vassals to the king<br>- Knights Role: Protected lord's land, given land for their services, chivalry, must provide military service, remain loyal and faithful to lord, give money to lord on special occasions.<br>- Lord's to Knights: Give land, protect from attack, resolve knight disputes.<br>- Manors were self sufficient. You never had to leave.<br>- Serfs were not allowed to leave the manor or marry without the lord's permission, but were allowed to farm on the manor in return for work.<br>- Serfs worked long hours, hardly lived passed 35 years, and if your parents were a serf, you were.<br>- </div>]]></description>
