U.S. forces bombarded Iwo Jima, a tiny volcanic island. They used shells and bombs during 70 days. And on February 19, 1945, US marine divisions landed on Iwo JIma. It was the invasion of Iwo Jima.

Who was involved?
The United States and Japan were involved.
 
What happened?
US marine divisions attacked the Iwo Jima an island with strategic value to build air bases and be closer to Japan. Japanese made caves to hide themselves and when the US marines arrived they opened fire killing a lot of them.

Who won ?
The United States won.

What was the significance?
The significance is that this was the first American attack on Japan.

The US and the UK cleared North Atlantic shipping lanes of Nazi subs before landing Allied forces in France. Germany was targeted with bombs.

The Allies won.

-What was the significance?
Nazi Germany had to now fight two fronts. The Allied invasion of the beaches of France was the first time that Hitler was repelled from advance. The D-Day landings in Normandy were the first step of the German invasion of all Western Europe.
