Quote

After driving through a small town, Mr.Walls took a sudden sharp turn, and his daughter "rolled several yards along the embankment, and when I came to a stop, I was too shocked to cry, with my breath knocked out and grit ant pebbles in my eyes and mouth. I lifted my head in time to watch the Green Caboose get smaller and smaller and then disappear around a bend... I was scraping the dried blood off my legs when I looked up and saw the Green Caboose come back around the bend" (Walls 30).

This quote is significant to the story because it shows that the Walls family do care for each other, even if they leave their children alone often. It is spoken by Jeannette.

This quote stood out to me because I can vividly imagine how painful that fall must've been.

Motif

A common motif that I've seen throughout this section of the book would have to be self sufficiency and resilience. There are plenty examples of Jeannette being self sufficient, from boiling hot dogs to lighting her own fires. She's also pretty resilient having survived being burned alive, and the fact that she never complained about it afterwards. Although, I'd have to stay that the real biggest motif is family. While her parents do take the "nature" approach of parenting, they still take care of their children when it counts most.

Personal Reflection

So far, these first 40 pages of the book have been very engaging to read. While my child years were nowhere near as "exciting", there were a few bits and bobs that I could relate to. One experience that I definitely share with the characters would have to be constantly from place to place. I never got to stay in one town, we'd always move at least once a year, and so I never really made any good friends, just like Jeannette.

Now my family is much more different than Jeannette's; we're much more "civilized" for a lack of better words. We have a higher standard of clean in my home, and my mom loves to keep it there, she'll go crazy over a few crumbs on the kitchen counter. My parents leave me alone because they can trust me to be responsible, but when I was a child I would almost never leave my mom's side; I would always have to go to parties with her. I'm also an only child, so no sibling activities for me.

One thing that I've learnt about Rex Walls is the love that he has for his family. No matter what, even while he's chasing that glass Castle, he'll take care of the Walls family.
