Differentiation on Listening #Day2

We've started a new adventure today. I thought that it would be difficult for us. Yes, being PDC Facilitator is challenging but we have also fun :) We are as a student who has a learning through experience. Participating and creating new activities are good and it provides us permanent learning. Also our teachers (Müge and Ebru Teachers) are very interested in PDC course, they are cheerful, modest, punctual. We are so lucky to know them.
Today, we make a differentiation task ( designing different lesson plan for stronger or weaker students) with the units in our curriculum. This is the part I liked most because I had an experience on changing, developing or removing a context or an activity from our course books according to our students' level. While doing these, we worked as pairs or groups . My colleagues have different and creative ideas so I feel lucky during these group works.
In order to improve curriculum and integrate technology to our lessons, we are assigned to introduce many websites. Websites are easy to access and appropriate for different students' level. However; I think, I won't be able to use many of them because I am working in a disadvantaged area. It makes me sad. So, we worked on differentiation on listening skill today. It was funny and useful. I am very excited to work on other skills and to find various activities according to my students' level and interests.

#Day3 - Maximizing Speaking Skills

"My students don't speak English in class"
Speaking skill which we worked on today is an important issue. I accepted that it is a big problem in class. But I realized that my collegues also think in this way. It made me feel relaxed when I heard their problems. I am not the only one dealing with these speaking problems (shy students, limited 2nd language use, preference mother tongue during lesson etc.) We found some possible solutions. After discussing solutions, we tried to develop, enhance and differentiate speaking activities on our MEB course books. It was very useful for me and my students beacause I will easily apply differentiated activites in the book next education year.
I had a problem during class today. It made me sad. Flipgrid app didn't work on my mobile phone (as the others') I didn't like the app and I won't use in my classes because it requires strong internet connection and huge storage on smart phones. It isn't appropriate for rural (disadvantaged) area schools. The app I have liked most is PAPERSLIDE. Group working, speaking while recording video, writing, sharing ideas, drawing actively.... All you can find in an activity. How awesome!!!
Moreover, we introduced Chatterpix, voki, and animato apps and we prepared demo lessons. I don't prefer the apps because they will take long time to prepare (for my students) so alternative activities inclass are more useful and I can involve my students. Since, they don't have no mobile phone or they have old one. they will may find them difficult to use and may lose their motivation and encourage.
In general, it was a good day. I am feeling more productive day by day. I am very excited for other days.

#Day4 - Adaptation and Differentiation on Reading Skill and Tasks

Pre-Reading : Teacher opens Imdb and show 3 types of movie with their trailers. Then, teacher asks "which one do you like most?" and teacher ask " what is your favourite movie? Can you show its trailer if you want?" Teacher continues saying "Some films are adapted from books. Do you know any example?" After students answers, Teacher shows a picture of Dead Poets Society and ask " have you ever watched it? Do you know what is it about? Then, keep going with pre - teach key words.
While Reading: Teacher wants students read the text for 18th activity (reading for main idea) Then, teacher wants students read again and complete T/F activity
Post-Reading: Teacher omit the 20th activity because it isn't about the text. Instead of it, students will prepare a blog page mentioning about their favourite films' details. For digital way, students will upload their own blogs on a blog app.
During lesson, what I liked most is "Engoo Daily News" website. Because finding suitable level of reading passages is difficult and also arringing task is a big concern so you choose a certain level of students in this website, then you choose the topic and that's all. Reading text and its tasks are ready to use in the class (with general reading tasks and detailed reading task) Certainly, I am going to use this website because I can find the topics which interests students.
In our class, We differentiate almost all skills except from Writing. And I wonder how we keep going on the way of being a facilitator.

Writing is the most difficult skill which students can't concentrate too much. If we give confusing tasks and they don't feel relaxed during writing, they will hate writing. While giving writing task, we should be clear about what we want. We should avoid long and boring expressions. We should encourage them to write. To do this, we should give a purpoose to write. "Why are they writing?" Our purpose should be entertaining, interesting and it should meet their needs so that they can achieve comprehension. Moreover; There are too general writing descriptions on local contexts. Students are getting confused when they read the instruction. They should be short and clear. At the same time, certain expectation from the task should be limited. (ex. 50-100 words).
In fact, my colleagues and I liked "British Council Learning Teens" a lot because there are "writing levels" and topics including daily life. What the most I liked is you can find free printable and ready tasks for writing lesson with ready template. That will be useful for me.

1- Learning structure is harder than learning vocab. My students are getting bored when they expose to structure (grammar) too much so I need to generate interesting context (with pictures, presentations, songs or interesting stories etc.) Also, I should keep them alert by asking comprehesion and concept checking questions during their learning.
2- Teachers wants to discuss on IMPLICIT GRAMMAR teaching. I mean, they need to discuss this. Generally, Teachers are following explicit grammar method (teacher-based one). For this reason, they need to practice and share good examples of implicit grammar teaching by regarding timing problems.

1- Students personalize vocabulary to learn more permanent. My students need to come across target vocabulary frequently because they forget easily. I need to expose them to use words by using them in different contexts (in different sentences)
2- They may make their own dictionary as a vocabulary notebook. It may help them remember easily because they can reach easily. They should prepare vocab notebook in different ways:
- They can write new words with their synonyms and antonyms.
- They can take new words on notebook with drawing easy symbols to remember it.
- They can write new words with their English definitions to acquire well.

1- In my area, teachers are always doing summative assessment They don't focus on assessing progress of learning or assessing students' development. Moreover, they are giving feedback with only marks (grading). They think feedback for each student is time consuming.
2- I am sure self or peer assessment will save us :) If teachers prepare a rubric before the assessment and give them students to study according to it, it will be easy for both students and teachers.

As a community, we will try to find solutions. Course books are a problem for every teacher. As a solution, we need to differentiate them. So my next step is that we are going to work on differentiation activities and task.
3- Mentoring system may help me during planing steps. I will ask my mentor or my coordinator if I have a PDC problem but if I have some problems about participants, venue or time, I will ask Provincial Directorate of National Education.
