I have been planning K-2 and occasionally K-5 lessons for several years now. Knowing the group's personalities, interests, and skill levels are important to planning successful activities. I consider their ability to do a project, the opportunity to learn new skills, how much help each child may need, and whether the activity would be appealing AND engaging. It's hard to balance all of these things. I find that arts and crafts projects are the best option in most cases. I use Pinterest for inspiration and browse various activity sites I've found through Pinterest. With K-1, even easy art activities can be challenging, but they're a good opportunity for them to practice fine motor skills. It's also challenging to mitigate disappoint when doing the "basics" if the older groups get to do more ambitious projects.
