Children do not all develop physically, step for step, at the exact same moment as other kids. That does not mean that they have a physical disability. A physical disability is a permanent condition that affects body movement and/or control. Some types of disabilities that you may see include: muscular dystrophies, brain or spinal injuries, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. Some things that may cause physical disabilities are genetics, illnesses, injuries, or birth defects.

The ADA is the "Americans with Disabilities Act." It became law in 1990. It stated that people who have disabilities would be granted the same opportunities as people without a disability. The applies to school, transportation, employment, and more. The act is not just for people with physical disabilities, many other disabilities also fall under it. Some of the things to consider with the act when it comes to schools are things like: busing, ramps in and around the building, the bathrooms, accommodations for the blind and deaf, etcetera.

I think when most teachers think of a physical disability they think about the layout of the classroom and the school. These things are important to look at, but a child who has a physical disability is affected beyond the physical realm. Some things to remember if you have a student with a physical disability in your class are: students may need extra time to travel between rooms or areas, students may be tired from exerting so much energy just to move, students may struggle with daily tasks (like note taking, reading, or using a computer), and students may have many absences due to doctor or hospital visits. You can help these students by allowing for more time to complete assignments, allowing them to use a tape recorder for lectures, catch them up on missing work, and help them social by pairing them with a buddy.

Did you know that the largest minority group in America is people with physical disabilities? I did not. A quarter of today's 20-year-old will be disabled by the time they retire. Unfortunately for school aged children with a physical disabilities they lack the socialization that other kids get because they are unable to participate in many afterschool activities.

It can be hard for adults to know how to act around someone new or someone with a disability. Think about how hard this can be for kids. It is so important to teach the other children in the class how to treat someone who has a physical disability. Below are a few kid-friendly pointers.
1. Smile at them.
2. Talk to them like you talk to your other friends.
3. Look at their eyes when you talk to them.
4. Some people need a "worker dog" to help them. Never pet these dogs. They are working.
5. Do not touch their personal items.
6. Do not help them unless you are asked to. They can do it!
The clip also suggested that you do not talk about the disability. However, I think that it is alright to have honest conversations about it with kids. This is how they learn and I think it makes everyone feel more comfortable. That has been my experience anyways.

This video features Maysoon Zayid, a women who has cerebral palsy (CP). CP is not genetic, it only occurs from accidents. The doctor who delivered Zayid was drunk and made errors that caused her to suffocate and because of that she now has CP. She is a writer, public speaker, actress, and comedian. She credits many of her achievements, despite having CP, to her father who always told her that she could do anything. If the other children in her family were doing something she was right beside them doing it as well. She has even tap danced on Broadway! She has spent many years trying to help the public, especially those in the entertainment industry, understand and be more accepting of people with disabilities. People with disabilities are the most underrepresented minority in the entertainment industry today. Zayid has made many contributions to this effort. She has also started a foundation to help Palestinian refugee children.

Techniques I Will Use to Help Children With Physical Disabilities In My Classroom

I think the most important thing that I can do for the children in my classroom that have physical disabilities is to help the other children understand them. I will teach my children to treat everyone the same. I will explain that we are all different in some way, but we all deserve friends and someone who will be kind to us. I will also try to adapt assignment. If a child has a hard time reading because they can't focus their gaze on text, I will read the chapters into a tape recorder and send it home with them. I will help them with their school work like everyone else. Lastly, I will teach them, like Maysoon's father taught her, that they can do anything! I never want any of my kids to feel limited. While they may not be able to do things in the same way as others, I want them to know that with education anything is possible!
