The conversation between Kristy and her mom at night was about what happened in school.

In kristy's room, when her mom asked : how was school?. At the beginning, she violated the maxims of quantity, because she didn't reply to her mom and give less information than is required. Then, her mom asked again, she obeyed the maxims of quantity. she replied : fine. This answer is informative enough.

Violate the 2 maxims: quantity and relation. According to the definition of relation, the sentence or answer must relate to the question. However, in the Kristy’s answer, she told Mom that “Well, you know how hot it was today?…And you know how sometimes a hot day can seem really long?”. This is because she doesn’t want her mother to find out that she isn’t fine at school so she tries to talk about other topic to avoid answering the question. This answer also violate the quantity because it gives more information than is required. Kristy talks about other topic instead of answering her mother’s question.
