Teaching Tip: Using Conversation Volunteers in the Remote Classroom Environment by Sandra Banke

Adapting in-person classroom teaching to remote delivery has presented numerous challenges, not least the effective use of classroom volunteers. In this poster session, the conference attendees learn how the presenter optimized the Zoom conferencing format and
employed her assistants, in this case Portland State University seniors completing their capstone graduation requirement, as asynchronous conversation partners for her high-beginning level adult ESOL students.

After they've signed up to work in my class, I get in touch with the PSU students to brief them on the project and ensure they know what is expected. Note -- it's best to meet with your tutors together, rather than individually, both to save time and so that they can learn from each other. I try to get an idea of their experience working with non-native speakers, their own language learning backgrounds, their interests, and so on. I give them general information about my class and students -- demographics, language backgrounds, educational backgrounds, etc. so they know what to expect. Additionally, depending on their prior tutoring experience & experience with non-native speakers, I give them some guidance on speaking speed, use of idiomatic expressions, and if/when/how to correct errors.

By and large, this process has worked well since our classes have been meeting remotely due to COVID. A real advantage to a more conventional use of classroom tutors is that my students get more focused and extended conversation practice with a proficient English speaker than can be afforded them in class. Additionally, the regular communication they have with their tutors, both in their appointments and if they need to reschedule, gives my students more agency in their language learning. The model also gives the volunteers more independence and responsibility in the tutoring process, as well as more contact with language learners than they would have with an in-person, synchronous model. For both of these reasons, I would like to continue with this conversation appointment activity even after we are back to in-person classroom instruction.
