Talking about migrants or refugees in my teacher's daily activity is a quite hard task. Knowing that in this everchanging world so many people move from their countries to seek asylum or a better life abroad we all citizen of the world must analyse and figure out what are the reasons for moving out and what the expectetations of these people are. I found it very interesting what Nora and Wolfgang say about the difference between migrants and refugees. Before attempting to deal with such a subject we teachers should get useful information about this puzzling reality and then try to face each student life with the right educational tools, a multicultural class needs interaction and acceptance that's why I really look forward to learn new educational approches to a colorful classroom in order to improve my good practices and open my mind to different cultures and habits.

I'm an English teacher at secondary schools and i'm working now in a small island in Southern Italy. There are some newly arrived students and we are expecting more in the following months. I'm teaching Italian to one of them and I find a bit difficult to choose which kind of ''italian'' I have to teach him. He certainly needs to speak and communicate as soon as possible but Italian grammar is very complicated. Also it's not easy to choose the right method and the suitable material.

Hi to all! My name is Niki and I teach mathematics in the Secondary Education is high schools near Athens, Greece. I have always had students in my classroom who had migrated to Greece but never a newly arrived yet, I suppose this is about to change.
What worries me most on how to address the topic in the classroom is the ideological family background of local students, which I don't know and at time it can be really hard to deal with.
I want to learn more about the situation and conditions of the newly arrived migrants' "previous" life, I really wish I could have some access to their educational system, how it works, what they are normally taught etc.
What I expect from this course is to broaden my knowledge on the subject and get some ideas on how to address the topic efficiently in the classroom, how to overcome the difficulties and help my local students accept and understand the new ones.

I am very happy to start this course because I think is offers me an opportunity to develop useful competences to use in classrooms. I teach in a primary school and my students have between eight and ten years. In my class there are foreign students from Romania. They are well integrated in the group class and relate positively with all their companions. In my school there are not refugees, but I'm interested to explore new teaching methods to create a good a collaborative atmosphere in class and to build solid and positive relationships.
A teacher must first know the student's culture and its way of life and then proceed to teaching.

In my school, there are about 10 students in the sum of 42, that can be considered as migrants. They all came from Albania but they are not newly arrived. We have no refugees. At the age of my students(4-6), it is not easy to approach the specific aspect of migrants and refugees. It is not that understandable.
In order to approach the aspect, i believe that, we as teachers should demonstrate sensitivity and estimate the personal background of our students. The lack of informations doesnt give us confidence to deal with the specific theme.
Through this course, i hope to learn more information that i would be able to use in my classroom in order to help my students.

I am really happy starting this second course. It offers me the opportunity to develop useful competences that I'll be able to use in classrooms. I teach in a primary school and my students are between six and ten years. In my classes there are students from ex-Kossovo, Albania and Marocco. They are integrated positively in the group. I think that media focus attention principally on what migrants flee from and on their dangerous journey towards Europe, but it would be very important raising awareness about the difficulties they face when they arrive in Europe, in order to understand not just what our newly arrived migrant students faced but also what they’re facing now.

Hello to everyone! I didn´t enrol in the previous course, but I hope I'll do ok in this one. Right now I am not teaching, but for the past 10 years I have always had migrant students in my Secondary classes. Most of them come from Morrocco, Latin America, Romania.
I have had trouble dealing with their Spanish or their academic underachievement. Sometimes I tried to make them talk about their own countries, culture, traditions, but not often got to motivate them. Some of them are second generation and they do not feel truly identified with what I asked them to talk about.
I have also had 2 Sirian brothers, but I was never brave enough to bring up the topic of their previous lives and the way they got out of Siria.
I would like to raise my own awareness on the topic and get to know it a bit more deeply. And also to learn some ways of addressing such a difficult issue with migrants or refugees as well as with national students so that they turn more sensitive ans supportive to other peer's problems.

Hello, everybody.
I have been a teacher of English as a second language in a Secondary school in deep down Sicily for over 30 years. My school is very close to the area where refugees and migrants, mostly from Africa, land after o long journey across the desert and the Mediterranean. My students are aged 11-14. Among them there are newly arrived immigrants. They are hosted in local communities and as soon as they arrive they are registered in our classes. I teach in six classes and there is at least one newly arrived in each. It is really difficult to communicate with them and not just because of the language. Very often they don't seem willing to communicate at all. They have no documents, so we don't even know their age. Most of them attend very rarely and seem very little interested in education. None of them is interested in staying here; they look forward to moving northwards, Germany or France, and as it often happens, they run away after two or three months.
As a teacher I feel very uneasy with the problem of working with these students and I do hope to get the most from this course.

The problem that I face is this uncertainty if I do enough to integrate different cultures in my school. We do not face the situation of having the refugees among us, however we admit students from all over the world to provide them with education, in the majority of cases, temporarily, as their parents are usually contract workers, diplomats or others who just reunite with families. So having over 30 nationalities at school, instead of great mixed family, we have got a lot of "national subgroups" which do not integrate if not at school.

I expect to find here among all of us and from you some advice on how to make them act together and unite not only when they stand against another newcomer or a refugee-to-come, who evokes fear and rebellion. This is one of few contexts when even different nationalities come together, it is really sad.

From many years Albanian people have emigrated all over the world ,including here my familiars. They told about the difficulties that they pass throw especially their kids.They notice the kids difficulty with learning the new language ,also they have to exercise more than others to fit in. My city has a long term history of migration. In the 50s/60s people came here from either the countryside or from other Italian regions. From the 80s to nowadays there have been immigrations from East Countries, Northen Africa, South America and Asia.
Because of the recent economic crisis many young people are now leaving Turin for a more stable country!

The last 20 years our school has become multicultural. 70% of our students are second generation economical immigrants, whose parents come from former Eastern bloc countries and few from Africa and Asia. These students were born in Greece, speak the Greek language well and are well integrated. The great challenge for our school and society are refugees mainly from Syria and Iraq. These students (about 20), came to our school in the last few months, do not speak the Greek language, most of them speak English and most of them see Greece as a stopover to a final destination in another European country. Their parents do not speak English and the communication is difficult. We know nothing about their cultural background, their difficulties, their perspectives, their futures.

Usually they stay at school for few weeks or months and then go for another European country. Regarding our school these students, apart from the basic need for learning the Greek language need psychosocial support to gradually and smoothly integrate in school and develop into successful and active citizens in a society that respects diversity. The role of the school in their successful integration is a prerequisite for social stability and cohesion in European societies.

The new challenges and priorities for our school regarding the effective NAMS’ integration into our school system is of paramount importance. We must find ways to:

- Ensuring a well-developed reception of migrant students and initial assessment

of migrants’ education background

- Placing NAMS into an appropriate class based on the assessment of their

previous schooling, abilities and needs

- Monitoring system ensuring adequate tracking and diagnosis of student’s

performance and potential

- Qualified teachers to work with culturally diverse students

- Smooth transition between reception and regular classes

- Prevention of early-schools leaving and provision of re-integration programmes

I believe that my knowledge with regard to what is happening in countries such as Syria, Pakistan and Somalia is poor. Therefore it is difficult for me to talk to the children about the situation that refugees from those countries have experienced before they come in Europe.

I hope that in this course I will acquire some more ideas about how to manage to inform my pupils about the situation of the newly arrived refugees.

In my classroom, almost half of the students are migrants, but they came chiefly here for family reunion, or they were born here from migrants parents who came because of economic reasons: my area (especially the northern side of the province) has been manufacturing weapons since the Middle Ages, so you can still find an employ here, if you are a manual worker, but some of the parents of my children are highly skilled... My pupils (or, at least, the majority of them) visit regularly their country (some of them even interrupted their regular couse of study to stay in Pakistan for one year or two...). So, they talk a lot about their countries and I try to integrate the usual contents with topics related to their country (for instance, studying climate, or environmental issues, or migration in history...), but I have never had a refugee as a pupil, even though we talked about this crisis a lot, and I think it could be hard job, especially because the trauma of leaving your country, your relatives, yoir friends, of having to learn a new language, totally different from yours, is improved by terrible events, like wars or the loss of beloved ones. In my village, there is an organization, called "Resilience". Doctors and psycologists go to refugees camps and countries which are facing difficult times to help children and train teachers. One of the volontary told us that, in the camp, every child seems to be an ADHD case... I hope to find a way to improve my knowledge in general, and, chiefly, on ways to face this issue... Thanks!

I am a teacher in classics at a high school, in a suburb near Athens. In our school we have about 30% pupils with roots from other countries, mostly former communists but they are totally assimilated in our society. We believe that very soon we are going to greet pupils from Syria or other refugees. I think that it will be difficult to prepare properly our students and their families, to accept them in our school enviroment and we will face the challenge to treat them effectivelly, according to their culture and their needs. Unfortunately, they have been some incidents in Greek schools, where parents tried to avoid refugees (students) from attending lessons in public schools!

Since we have over 56 different nationalities in our school, I could say that we are almost daily confronted with the situation of migrants. We also have special classes for Newly Arrived Immigrants, where the learn the language and the major lines of Belgium culture and school system in one year. The biggest gap there still is, according to me, is that teachers who work with these students every day, do not know about the system, laws, ... concerning migrants. And the biggest concern for all schools is : what do we do with students who received a negative answer from Immigration (and therefore get no financial support and should officially leave the country), but still have the right to go to school ?

To be honest, my knowledge on immigration and its problems is mainly of a theoretical point of view.Surely i've had the chance to study theory or take part in seminars,even work in the classroom on the subject via activities and well planned projects bur the truth remains that never in my entire life have i actually fought for immigrant rights on the terrain..and that;s something i regret. Still, our work as teachers should comprise integration of immmigrant students in the school where each one of us works. That;s a goal worth fighting for i suppose.
I feel quite inadequate as far as my teaching methods are concerned when it comes to accomodating immigrants in my classrooms... i only try to have a good contact with the kids and the families if they allow me first to make the first approach.
I hope this mooc gives us all more information and insight on how to deal and hopefully integrate migrant students in our classrooms.

He is in our class ,even if he is older than his schoolmates, because of the language. The main problem is not only the difference of age, but also the different background. Hello, I'm a primary school teacher (special need teacher). Last year, in my school, two little brothers arrived from Macedonia. They didn't speak italian at all, so I proposed to start an alphabetization course to introduce them to italian language. I noted that the most important hurdle was that at home families did'nt agree with use italian language. An other problem was that the school comunity wasn't excited to accept them. I am Italian and teach English as a Foreign Language lower secondary schools belonging to the same Institute. The schools are based in two small towns of Cilento, a national park rich in natural beauties. It isn’t a rich area and economy is mainly based on summer tourism in costal localities. There isn’t a large number of migrants, even though since 20- 25 years ago they have significantly increased. They are mainly from East Europe, but there are also many Moroccan. From three or four years onwards I see many black people, who live in a hosting center near the place where I live, I suppose they are there waiting for a refugee recognition or being sent back to their countries.

Anyway, in my career I had only a few “migrant students” for each school year, mainly Romanian and well integrated. I never had refugees or children without parents.

However, I think that as teachers we have the duty to deeply understand and inform and rise awareness about the phenomenon in our students.

At school, I think I would feel less confident when it comes to communication (language differences), tradition and general views about life (different mentality) and the education approach ( they are use to another view, another approach of teaching-learning process).

I teach in vocational highschools and because I am a substitute teacher, I move around greek islands. I know and have seen what is happening with refugees and migrants, but to be honest I have not been involved. In school, there are always migrants in the classroom but they are assimilated (they are many years here). I do not believe that I will meet refugees in my classroom because is difficult for someone newly arrived somewhere to learn a craft. I think this course is more personal.

I’m a secondary school teacher.

I have lots of difficulties in managing a class made up of fifteen students, half of which come from Morocco.

They can speak Italian quite properly but when they are fed up with lessons ,usually this occur after only 50 minutes , they get apart, start speaking their native language and play bad jokes to Italian students.

In addition they break every rule they can with pleasure.

I tried to do my best: I defended them from other teachers that just wanted to punish them; I tried to have a dialogue, to understand their inner thoughts, but when it seem to me to see a progress, they start to behave in a bad way again. They look like they reject our culture being frightened to forget their roots and really don’t want to integrate.

Despite this facts, I still hope to help them to establish a good relationship with the other classmates so that everyone can have a bright future and become an aware citizen.

I know they can or they wouldn’t have learned our language so quickly but I don’t understand their behavior either what else a can do to make things better; so I decided to enroll this course to get inspired

Generally, I believe that it's easy to get more information about all the aspects of the topic even if someone is not well informed or even ignorant! The most difficult task for me is how to address this topic with the students and with the refugees or migrants. If you have to do only with indigenous students and you are preparing them for the arrival of migrants or refugees then you can freely discuss with them the situation of refugees/migrants and what problems they are facing or why they left from their countries, or examine the journeys that refugees take to Europe. On the other hand, you cannot do the same with the refugees,especially, students and that's because it's a very sensitive topic for them. In my opinion they all know well why they left from their countries and what the situation in their countries is. The only thing they want is to forget about their past and start a new life from the beginning. Teachers need to be beside them in every step they take and help them in their new life.

I’m Roberta, I’m a teacher in a primary school in Turin.

I have been teaching in this order of school from 2001, nevertheless , this is the First time that I teach in a First Class.

My class is composed by 22 students and 8 of them are foreigners (only one was born abroad while the other had one or both parents born in another country.

So in my classroom there are: 3 Romanian, 1 Albanian, 1 Russian, 1 Peruvian, 1 Maroccan and 1 Brasilian students.

My school is in Turin’s periphery that is mutietnic and offer us a lot of activities (cultural and sportive).

I am a psychotherapist, I’m married and I have got two children too.

I like my job, I like it very much. I love it because I think that everyday can be an occasion to learn something because everyone may teach something to others. So, everyday I have 22 teachers! I’m so lucky!

I like to use tecnology and fantasy during my lessons, but I belive that the most important teaching method is a serene atmosphere where everyone can be himself, increase their self-esteem. For all of these reason, I belive in the importance of enchance own origins, own culture and, consequently, own uniqueness.

I am from Spain but living in Belgium!
I would like to learn more from all the teachers around Europe and their experiences with migrants & refugees.
I am working in EfVET, the European Forum of Vocational Education & Training, we just started an Erasmus + programme project, named LikeHome, which is looking into education & integration for migrants & refugees.
Today, we are all migrants. In my personal case, I migrated looking for a better opportunities due to the economic situation of my home country. Therefore, I feel ashamed watching the headlines from the Greek and Morocco borders. Watching how the European authorities are letting to do the dirty job to other countries and how our sea, the Mediterranean, has become the biggest cemetery.
Nevertheless, once they reach our countries we have the responsibility to help them and to extend our solidarity to them.
In my personal opinion, the first action should be attend their health & social necessities. Once they will established, education is key for integration of them, that's why I let you an introduction video with the online linguistic support for refugees in the previous post!

Until a few years ago, before being a democratic country, Portugal was a country of great emigration, mainly of an economic but also of political nature. Many Portuguese also sought better living conditions in the former African colonies (Angola, Mozambique, ...).

After the revolution of April 1974, with the introduction of the democratic regime followed the decolonization of these countries and returned to Portugal approximately 1 million Portuguese fleeing from the Civil War that settled in the former Portuguese colonies. These Portuguese, fleeing from the war came without anything being necessary that the Portuguese state provides them the basic conditions of subsistence, housing, employment, that is, to integrate them. This integration was not easy because these newcomers, even if Portuguese, were viewed with suspicion as they threatened jobs and brought with them different ideas and customs.  More recently, prior to the current financial crisis, Portugal received many of second generation migrants, mostly from Portuguese-speaking African countries, from Brazil, from some eastern countries, and more recently from China.  The "refugees" or "newly arrived migrants", that we well know by the “news”, only recently started to be placed in Portugal but I think well as a teacher, with increased responsibilities in the management, either as a person It is my duty to seek to facilitate their integration. I am a primary school teacher in an Experimental primary school in Alexandroupolis, a city located in NorthEast Greece, near the Greek and Turkish borders. In our school we don't have yet newly arrived kids. Refugees coming from Syria with boats, stay in our city for a short time and then move to hosting centers in other Greek cities. But I still remember the 2 girls who came 3 years ago in our school's gym club. They were from Avganistan and they stayed here for a couple of months waiting to travel to German to meet their parents. I remember myself being uncofident to handle the emotional part of the topic. I am a teacher at a lower level Secondary School (aged 10 -17) in the northwest of Germany. The student body has a wide range of ethnic and educational backgrounds, mostly non-German. Many disputes at school resolve from clashes between cultures and religions.

Physics, wood-working and Technology are the subject for which I have my teaching degree..

One and a half years ago many refugees and migrants arrived in our town in Germany. Most of the children aged 10 – 16 were assigned to our school. They are approximately 20% of the student population. I was forced to teach 10 periods a week of German and German culture to the new students. Am I qualified? Not really. My only qualifications were that I am a foreigner and learned German by living here, not in school. So, I went from teaching Physics to teaching how to get through the day without understanding German and learning at the same time. There were 15 students from 12 countries in my class. Arabic or “Slavish” was common between them. English is my native tongue. I have learned many new aspects about life around the world. But, if you don’t leave your homeland for love as I did, then you leave it like many of the children, because you have nothing to lose. Life couldn’t get any worse. No food, no water and death and torture everywhere. So the only hope to survive is to leave for the unknown.

After being forced to swim in cold water, I found that I really enjoyed working with these students. It is very rewarding. I have a strong bond with many of them. Most of these pupils are now participating in regular classes and taking the same exams as the pupils that have always gone to school in Germany.

I joined this course hoping to be able to get more knowledge and how handle the topic in the best way and to feel more comfortable doing it. These uprooted children need to be integrated into student body. Now that they are no longer in “safety”, my special German class, misunderstandings and conflicts are starting to arise due to differences in heritage and religion.

My goal for this course is to be more conscious of the actual situation in specific part of the world in order to reflect as a person and as an educator on how Italy could be better involved in the process of protect newly arrived migrants and, at the same time, how to give them a concrete help in terms of shelter, job, education for children and youngsters. Secondarily, I wish to become more confident in talking about these topics in my classes, even if we are non facing one of these situations in first person. Students have the right to be informed properly and in a way that fits their age. My students are from 10 to 14. At this age they are building their own identity and, in my opinion, it is now that they should have the correct instruments to build their own opinions about specific topics of such relevance.

The main feature is that they are moving people from one country to another and they want to leave Greece. Hello to all. I am a teacher in a secondary school. I teach physical education and support for children with special needs. In my class there aren't students with refugee status, but only migrants who are in Italy for several years. In my home country, I frequent during the summer, but I got to know the boys hosted refugees and I was impressed by their stories. I think sleep in class these kids it's hard because teachers must also possess psychological skills but I think even that would be an excellent resource for teaching kids the dialogue, confrontation and acceptance. I used to teach in a secondary school in Brussels. Quite a few of my students are migrants or come from migrant families and a couple of them are refugees. My main problem is that sometimes, as teachers, we are not informed about the background of our students, we rarely know why they came to Belgium and don't always take the time to discuss this with the students when they arrive in class or we don't know if they feel confident to discuss this with the whole group. In the current context in Belgium, teachers in urban areas are easily accused of "racism" by the students (above all a 100% Belgian person as I am) as sometimes "clumsiness" due to a lack of information can be misinterpreted so it might seem easier to avoid discussion even though cultural difference is very enriching for the whole group. Another problem is that working with so many different nationalities, international contexts and conflicts are omnipresent at school and without being well-informed, it is difficult to avoid void discussion and foster productive debates.

Hi everybody! I teach English in a Secondary School in Calabria. As you know, my region constantly hosts migrants and refugees and as teacher I have to face and manage different students' backgrounds. In the past I had seven pupils coming from Africa. They were minors and refugees. They experienced war in their countries and a terrible journey across Africa and to reach Europe. Some of them went to prison in Libia because they didn't have any documents and when war broke out there, they have been forced to leave Libia for Europe. They didn't want to come here! I will never forget the pain and dignity in their eyes. I did my best to help them but I think Italian school system is still unprepared to face the tragedy these people experience in their life. Teachers need the support of organizations and institutions. I felt lonely. Today I'm working with two girls and a boy coming from Egypt. I'm teaching them Italian. In Italy a foreign student has to attend a class according to his/her age and no preparatory courses are provided to help them with the new language and new subjects at school. It depends on the decisions of each school, there isn't a common line. I think this is really unfair and for teacher is hard work to fill the gap between foreign students and italian students. I hope that this second course will help me to learn more about the newly arrived migrants and to get useful information to deal with institutions and organizations working where I live. I don't want to be lonely anymore!

Hello everyone. I teach in secondary education in Athens. There are students from migrant backgrounds but because of the level (Upper High) and the aim (University Entry) of the school, most of them have already adjusted. My subject is civil studies and we teach about migrants and refugees, human rights, asylum and other similar issues. It is important to know how to approach these issues, as to not offend and mislead students. I have personally joined solidarity organisations to help and support migrants and refugees that arrived in Hellas and specifically in Pireas port. It has been a very intense situation, at least until the first "waves" of people came by and everyday came back to normalities.
I do not believe though we shall ever forget the faces of those people and in my eyes, they were the Europeans fledding to Minor Asia during the Second World War, away from the bombs and the starvations, the poor Europeans migrating to Canada, Australia and the US before and after the war, and so many before them...
This is not a problem of others. All nations have been, at least once, in a situation where they felt the need to migrate in bulks.
Respect and humanity if not solidarity is the least we can provide
