The song "Santa Monica" by Everclear has a very dark background that not many know about. The singer and song writer Alexakis, experienced the suicide of of his girlfriend at the age of 15. In this song, Alexakis expresses the words and thoughts towards his girlfriend, wishing things could have been different and dreaming of how it should have been. In the end, this song perfectly exemplifies the painful and sad emotions that losing someone can inflict, even with a fun sound.

He thoroughly uses the appeal of ethos along with logos in the lyrics. In the video, he effectively uses the same appeals of ethos and logos to express what he is going through.

Lyrics - Logos

"Santa Monica" is a song that very effectively talks about the appeal of logos. In the first example, "I don't wanna be the bad guy" you can see how Alexakis states how he does not want to be portrayed as. Loss can cause emotions like guilt and betrayal, which make people feel horrible for leaving and forgetting about someone who has passed. Because of this moving on is a very difficult thing to do and Alexakis didn't want his moving on to be seen as wrong. Another example of logos is the line, "I don't wanna be your stupid game". This is him stating that he is tired of her playing with him in a specific way. She is constantly in his head and never leaving him alone, almost as if he is something to toy with. He has gone through this for some time and wants to finally move on. The final lyrical example of the logos appeal is when Alexakis said "we can live beside the ocean". This is him talking to her about a life they could have lived, a life that was within reach. Beside an ocean is close to where Alexakis grew up, linking his dream for them to a comfortable place in his life. While many not know that fact, the ocean is still a calm and peaceful that would still relax many of their troubles.

Lyrics - Ethos

The use of appeals within the lyrics was very well done but there is one that sticks out the most, Ethos. Ethos was very well written to create connections and emotions while still enforcing the emotional status of Alexakis. For example, when he says "I'm still living with your ghost", you can understand the state that her suicide has left him in. He is struggling to move on and leave her in the past. Another example is when Alexakis says "hungry and hollow for all the things you took away". This clearly shows how he is yearning for what they had. The experiences and spots in his life that she filled was all of a sudden empty and he is "hungry" for those feelings again. The final example of Ethos is when Alexakis says "lonely and dreaming of the west coast". Just like in the Logos example, the west coast is where Alexakis called home as a child. This is him reflecting on his life before it got difficult and filled with these troubles. He is lonely with out her or his family, making the dreams of an easier and simpler time more potent.

Nicely paired along with the relationship tells us how problems were faced which tells us the kind of state and person Alexakis was in the video.

The song "Santa Monica" makes use of the appeals very well. Logos is used many times in the lyrics along with the song to state the ideas that may not have been seen or heard. The second appeal that was used extremely well was ethos. Ethos explained the problems and places that Alexakis was in during this story. Both of those used together, created a perfect vision and explanation of the story he was telling.
