Professional “Take Away” from Reviewing Resources:

Upon reviewing sources on compassion fatigue and burntout, my biggest takeaway is that in order to mitigate them, self-care is paramount. Reminding ourselves to care for ourselves is the best way to allow the care for others! For three years I have worked as a school counselor and have been experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout. What I have NOT been doing, is practicing frequent self-care. This week, I started doing so and have seem marked improvement in my professional performance.

Reflection on Importance of Self-Care in the Helping Profession

The old adage, "in the event of an emergency landing, you must place the mask over your face before supplying it to others" rings true and I am reminded of that daily. In order to care for others, we must care for ourselves first. Previously, I viewed self-care as somewhat selfish. I do not agree with this anymore as I have learned how much power is associated with self-care. We cannot pour into others and help them, providing them with affirmations and goals the way we do, if we are not pouring into ourselves first. Neglecting ourselves is the first step headlong into counselor burnout.

One strategy that I have learned for personal self-care is grounding myself after a day of work. Grounding is simple, and takes little time and effort. Simply put on a guided meditation or podcast that practices mindfulness and helps you let go of your day of work. You may also do this without the aid of a podcast or meditation. I have done this by listening to my favorite song at a loud volume and singing it loudly. When I do this, the troubles of my day dissipate before I get home and switch into my role as a mother.

Floating!: This image shows a floating pod that I was in today for the ultimate self-care experience. Floating pods allow one to become virtually weightless and fully check out of any day-to-day stress. For the analytical minded people, floating allows you to let go of your to-do lists and just be present. It is a sensory deprivation experience that enables you to block out all sights, sounds, smells, worries, angst, and fears and float into the most amazingly invigoration relaxation I have ever experienced. I came out rested and reset, ready to take on anything ahead of me.
