"We know that language gap is the main driver of the achievement gap between socioeconomic groups." This sentence was so powerful and stuck out to me so much. Students around us have such varying lives. This I know, but reading that statement (and saying it out loud) make my reading instruction seem that much more important than ever before. Many students come from homes where very little family interaction and dinner discussions exist. I learned that I HAVE to make sure I am spiraling my visual cues and vocabulary instruction just as much as I am with math. This is difficult for me because I am such a math minded person, but this sentence made me pull out my lesson plans and slowly begin to "tweek" them. I am involving more visuals and higher level thinking questioning, as well as adding in new technology I think the students will enjoy (without losing focus on the lesson goals). This chapter has probably been one of my favorites from this book!

(Renee Powell)
