Just yesterday I was talking to a parent about the multisyllabic routine and how they need to have their teenager demonstrate it while on furlough from the Juvenile Hall. The student committed to do it to show off their new found talent.

Spelling

Changing up some spelling practice strategies and even changing the way I do the spelling test with some of my lower spellers has seen some real success! My lowest speller just scored 100% on our last test!

Spaghetti

A student here at the juvenile hall would never say the word spaghetti because they would mispronounce it everytime. After using the multisyllabic routine, the student went around saying spaghetti to all the students and staff she could find!

Much more aware of specific students needs who are from ESL families. Making specific steps and practices to check up on them and help them with reading comprehension and work completion. Employing some of the techniques here has been a boon to the process!

It's been transformative to be able to make the correlation between practicing fwithyounger students and going through the process with older students. I love the community that has been sharing and on the journey together. I feel we have all had a lot of ahas!

When reading “Warrior Girl Unearthed” all levels of students got to see what it was like not knowing how to pronounce Native American words. We were all on the same page sounding them out and it really showed that it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

I've been working with a 7th grade student frequently on word parts all year to help him fill in reading gaps. His first i-ready diagnostic this year put him at a grade 1 reading level. His most recent one put him at a grade 3 reading level.

Multi-Syllabic Words

When I hear my middle schoolers using what they know to decode multi-syllabic words instead of mumbling through them... it's amazing.

Our district allowed us to change our major assessment tool and it has been such a win for our students - so much more accurate and relevant to our student population. Having that has encouraged me to use fluency and phonics assessments more frequently and just making reading a priority.

One of the best moments has been sitting next to an 8th grader and seeing her go from very insecure about answering comprehension questions, to answering with confidence (and an improved accuracy).
