Prologue Padlet Post by Mrs. Vlahos

The Prologue of Romeo and Juliet references how an "ancient grudge break to new mutiny" (line 3). Think of a event in recent or ancient history, American or world wide, in which an old conflict has resurfaced and influenced a modern conflict. Identify the event and compose several sentences of explanation.

One event that happened long ago that still affects us today is jobs and how we compete with immigrants for those jobs like with the Red Scare. During the Red Scare many people were violent with each other for jobs and much blood was shed because of this. Today many people are desperate for jobs and would do anything for those jobs and they especially wouldn't want immigrants taking the jobs they need so they throw racial slurs at each other and even get violent with each other in rare cases.

So even to this day the Red Scare haunts us to this day even when we wish for it to not affect us anymore we are forever haunted by these morbid thoughts of the past and not much has seemed to change since back then.

In the late 1910s through the early 1920s, a phenomenon called the Red Scare blossomed in the United States. Triggered by the Bolshevik Russian Revolution, an immense fear of communism and anarchism was put on the minds of many people living in the United States. Many citizens became fearful of immigrants who came to the United States from communist countries and these immigrants were often crucified in almost every aspect of their life.

Eventually, the Red Scare passed, but the underlying fear of communism stuck around. This fear still exists among many people today. However, when things began to grow tense between the United States and the USSR (especially when we learned of their obtention of nuclear weapons) a new Red Scare began. Though it was under the new name. McCarthyism, popularized by the Senator Joseph McCarthy, was the same deal. The United States was thrown into a hysteria of suspicion. Every aspect of someone who was deemed suspicious was overanalyzed. If you didn't fit the square of a good, capitalist citizen, you were crucified socially and could potentially be arrested under improper charges or the victim of a hate crime.

This new Red Scare sparked the Cold War and is still the subject of one of the greatest modern controversies in United States history.

Zika Virus- Kingston Perkins

Old Grudge:
The Zika Virus has always been known, but was first originally found in the year 1947 in West Africa by the Nile River. The disease or virus, which ever you prefer to call it is known to be related to dengue, yellow fever and West Nile virus. The 'thing' that transmitted the disease is actually a species of mosquito called the Aedes species mosquito. The disease is transmitted/given to a person through a bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, but also through the contact of touching an infected human's mucus or blood, quite similar to Ebola. The solution at the time was to just kill of the mosquitos using pesticides which worked... temporarily.

What Happened In-between:
People who have the disease don't always show symptoms of the disease, only 80% of people do. However the 20% who don't show symptoms don't always know they are holding the disease and aren't very cautious. In 2015, a major breakout occurred in Brazil. But how does a disease go from one continent to another? As said before, the disease can be transmitted from person to person via blood or mucus contact. There's one simple answer that was found in early 2016, blood transfusions.

New Mutiny:
When the breakout occurred in Brazil, researchers and scientists did not know that blood and mucus contact of an infected person spread the disease. During this time, Brazil and other Nations were donating blood to these in need, and potentially, some donors were carriers of the disease. With people in Brazil getting tainted blood, more and more cases had come up of people with the Yellow Flu, Dengue, and most importantly... West Nile Virus, a disease that supposedly was erased from Earth has suddenly come up again. In America, more outbreaks began to occur as well, causing somewhat a mass panic. Researchers also found an increase of the population for the Aedes mosquitos not just in Africa, but also in Asia and North America. With the threat of blood donors actually having the potential of transmitting diseases, hospitals are now required to inspect a person's blood before they wish to donate. If a person is said to have Zika in them, the person must wait 4 weeks for their body to fight the virus. (Which didn't work and caused more problems.)
