Physical theatre is anything that puts the human body at the centre of the storytelling process. As a result it’s often abstract / symbolic in style.

Welcome to your first blog post.

You are going to write a post that evaluates how you used the style and form of Physical theatre to create a piece of drama symbolising the struggle of the creature when he is abandoned by Frankenstein. Use the model answer below to help you (I have also posted a definition of physical theatre separately.

CHALLENGE: Try to use alternative vocabulary to replace the word 'effective'.

Model Answer:

In my group we used the style and form of physical theatre to help set the scene and communicate how difficult it was for the creature abandoned in a scary city environment. We first stood in a line to create a wall that the creature was peering over and using to hide behind as he was scared. Then we transitioned into the shape of a train heading straight towards the creature. To make the physical movements even more powerful we used a sound scape of city noises like cars beeping and the rushing sound of the train. This emphasised how loud the city would be for the creature.

Drama Homework

In my group we were supposed to create a Drama piece about a creature who is created by a scientist that abandons him leaving him alone in the city. For this lesson our objective was to use the technique physical theatre. In order to involve this style we created a pathway which opened up to allow the creature to come through, this would make the scene look more like the city because of the way the pathway would create a opening like bridges would in the city. We created a statue by a stand and one of our members of our group and this would create levels which is another style that was not compulsory but we did any way also it would show the different levels and sizes of the buildings in the city. We created two trees and while the creature was moving the trees would move, to look like it is was a windy, stormy day. Finally we created rain with one of our members creating soundscape which gave it a atmosphere of a dark and eerie night that the creature was travelling through and this would show physical theatre because we were making noises from a very windy day which the creature was travelling through. Miss Griffiths was our volunteer for our Drama piece to be the creature because then my group could have more members to create the scene and make it look more like a city to vary the buildings.

We also used some constructive techniques in our play by adding flock of birds, unison, sculpturing and more...

in my group we used physical theater to show how hard and weird it was for the monster/creature to go out of the building and see the outside world! For the creature it was really hard to stand on his/her own. in my group we decided that the creature at the beginning to trip over a table
( Ziya ) and fall to the ground but after the creature got up and went out the door and went and starting smelling two woman's ( Kirandeep & Monica ) but the two females runes away and the creature followed them but he saw that the females were scared so he wanted to go back up stairs in the room but this man bumped into him and he got angry and he starting screaming at the man. After he was on the stairs this kid bumped into and he was really pissed and he started screaming ate him, the kid was really scared and he went back to his parent.

By: Bianca Ionita Andreea 8H

We used a range of movements to create the scenery. For example in our group we acted as people in the city seeing the monster. We also used physical theatre effectually as we used movement to symbolise the buildings and the trees and the rest of the background scenery. As well as this we used soundscape to set an eerie mood and atmosphere.

In my group we used physical theatre to convey the message of the creature being scared and alone in the city and not knowing what to do. We didn't use dialogue in our performance, but instead used soundscape to build up a more eerie atmosphere and an uncanny and sinister momentum. In our scene the city is deserted which also creates a spectral, ghostly feeling. When the creature walks in (Ms Griffiths) Tasnim and I create a creaking drawbridge to let the creature in, but quickly snap it shut, so it's as if the creature is trapped. We then quickly morphed into our buildings, using different techniques and a lot of stamina to create intricate shapes. The whole group was able to make a really awesome cityscape, when Kirandeep was a really cool withered-looking, lifeless tree, Saira a ghoulish looking statue and Natalia and Mayeesha creaking, old and leering buildings. To also add to the soundscape, we made rustling noises and howls in the wind. This expressed that the city was a nightmare for the creature to walk around in. By using physical theatre, it really showed what the city was like deserted.

the topic for the class was when we used physical theatre to make a scary town for Frankenstein to visit for the first time. He is a creature that never had visited the world outside since he had just learned how to move. He had abandoned his flat.

What went well...

The door was a really good use because it showed how Frankenstein was separated from the world outside that he never knew. The sound effects of the creak was a good idea!

The tree was to show how Frankenstein would've reacted to see how different things there were. the sound effect was the wind and it was to make Frankenstein hear what the nature had.
Even better if...
there was more physical theatre than dialogues used by characters. That was our weakest point and it was a mistake that hopefully won't be facing again.

We had used much less physical theatre skills but afterwards we understood how much necessary it was to use. The physical theatre in our piece of work was the door (Nahida), the tree (Sebrine) and Frankenstein (Aliza).

Overall our work was good enough since we had collaborated to find the idea

We were all told to do one thing and we will do it.we won't nag or disagree because we wanted to make it as perfect as we could. We enjoyed creating it and performing it physically. Room 13 or Door 13 was interesting and amazingly acted by everyone. We didn't use much dialoge but made soundscape noises to pretend it's real. The transitions were slow but a good enough time ratio to make the drama scence just the right amount of time.Trees were gushing and swaying, statues were moving and buildingsand there is always someone following them...It was peeping at the creature non stop.
