Later in the 19th century the use of it was normal and not seem as harmful. Morphine was used to ease pain during surgeries but this resulted in some addicts. In 1898 heroin was made and was labeled to treat coughs. Babies were given this when they were crying to act as a soothing syrup, but many died from overdose. Around the early 20th century people realized the addictive effects relating to opium.

Heroin is extremely deadly also, when overdosing it is hard to recover. Since heroin slows down your heart rate it can slow down the heart rate to the point of death.
