Through several hours of playing Assassin's Creed III, I took part in many occurrences of historical learning. The game is set up where I go back in time and change history for the better. I will post pictures of gameplay that promoted literacy and learning.

Boston Tea Party

While playing Assassin's Creed III, I was virtually present during the Boston Tea Party. In this situation I had to defend the ship in which Colonists defied British rule and dumped British Tea into the harbor. While defending the ship, the character I played as talked to the colonists about the reasoning behind the dumping of the tea. The colonists responded, "We are tired of British tea being sent to our home and the King taxes the tea to any amount he so desires" This part of the game can teach gamers the reasoning behind the Boston Tea Party.

Boston Massacre

While playing Assassin's Creed III, I was present during the Boston Massacre. Here I was suppose to defend the colonists and kill the British. What was interesting about this scene in the game is I was able to chose which side I wanted to defend. I was able to replay the scenario and pick both sides. The historical reference in the game had to do with who shot first. Did the British or the colonist strike first? In both scenarios I took part it the rival group claimed the other started the battle. In this situation I learned that it said that no one truly knows who shot first, but United States history book claim that the British were the aggressors. This game taught me something that I did not know in history, and I am sure others did not as well.

Benedict Arnold

Another scenario that I participated in was talking to Benedict Arnold. As most know Benedict Arnold was a trader during the Revolutionary War. In the game I was given order by Benedict Arnold to assassinate a key figure in the British Army. Little did I know that it was a set-up and I was ambushed by many British soldiers. Although this scenario did not teach much historical events, it got the gamer familiar with the name Benedict Arnold. Therefore, when students are learning about the Revolutionary War and Benedict Arnold come up for discussion, the gamer could relate their knowledge from the game to real history.

Conclusion

Along with historical content, the use of different literacies were present. For example, the use of a compass, GPS, and symbols were used within this video game. The use of video games can really promote literacy and knowledge. (Depending on the game) This game puts you in control of historical events. While virtually present in these events, a lot of knowledge is forced at you without you even knowing it. Gaming is a fun way for students to educate themselves outside of the classroom.
