It fits with the confident papacy of Julius II. The end wall of the chapel is very different. But it too reflects its times.
 
In 1527 Rome is sacked by an unruly army of German mercenaries, while Clement VII shelters helplessly in the Castel Sant'Angelo. In the aftermath of this appalling event, Clement commissions Michelangelo to paint the end wall of the Sistine chapel. The subject is to be the Last Judgement. Again Michelangelo captures the mood perfectly, giving this traditional cautionary tale a dark and dramatic violence.

He met the second great love of his life Vittoria Colonna, her passion was the reform of the Catholic church to Protestantism, this was a form of Christianity who thought there were errors in the Roman Catholic church. She awoke Michelangelo to a further heightening of his already powerful religious beliefs. It was his growing fixation of the afterlife that influenced the contents of the Final Judgment. Represents Christ judging the souls in heaven and earth. The dark imagery is a stark contrast to the uplifting imagery of the Creation of man, Christ is shown not as a redeemer but as a but a wrathful condemner.

The focal point in this painting  is where god and adam connect, their finger tips touching. The image is really balanced god and adam are given equal space within the composition and are on an equal level. This can be read as a rejection of the dogma of medieval christianity and a valuing of the potential of man.

The shape that is created resembles that of a brain, god and adam making up the hemispheres. This reflects classical platonic values - intellect.

One soul has been shown with a money bag and two keys that dangle from his chest, this is meant to symbolise his sin of avarice (greed for wealth and material growth). Another damned is being pulled down by a demon to his inevitable fate by his scrotum. this symbolises  his sin as lust. This shows christian values as these items and what they represent comes from Christianity and the Old Testimate. the objects  symbolise the the deadly sins and reinforces their significance and the effect they have on your after life and how your actions will determine where you will spend eternity.
