It's changed in the sense that biases is something that there are chances where review may be paid or effected through biases. What changed in the last years (maybe decades) is that there is an overflow of opinions about each work being published online and the critic and vehicles need to work harder to conquer and keep their audiences.

I believe this role has stayed fairly consistent, however in present day, I think critic roles have become overly negative.
