I think a critic's responsibility was to evaluate a product/service/concept and report on its performance in a less biased way then the creator/seller/advertiser. But because what was published prior to today's day and age in technological advancement, critics would have to report on a product in a way that can apply to the general audience (because what actually got published was very limited) compared to nowadays when critics mainly report on their personal anecdotal experiences (because really everything we want to say can get published if we really wanted to)

I would say a critic's main role boils down to giving their personal opinion on creative works in order to analyze them. I believe this role has stayed fairly consistent, however in present day, I think critic roles have become overly negative.
Especially in movies, I feel that critics often focus heavily on the negative aspects of the piece, because that is what gets them traction.

I think that critical review should follow the same rules as any discussion or debate; a person can be as uninformed or biased as they want, in the internet era where everyone’s a critic it’s easy enough to sift through to find critics that you think have merit. The value of a critic is almost as subjective as the subjects of their review.
