Ratliff describes the idea of the single note in a piece as an idea in which can give a song meaning, purpose, or can be used to make a statement. He describes the single note as having authenticity when it comes to the artist performing it. That is, it has authenticity because no one else has played that single note in the exact same way or manner. I agree with Ratliff's assertion of the single note in this regard because focusing on a single note throughout a piece can bring the listener back to the root of the song and can give the song purpose just as Ratliff stated. In "I Only Have Eyes for You" by the Flamingos on Ratliff's playlist, the focus on the single repeating note helps give the song a foundation/base to build off of and to help give the song a sense of purpose and direction on where to go. In the song "Lost Memory"by Boris Brejcha, the song starts out with the focus on a beat revolving around a single note providing the base for the song. A little melody and harmony are then added in to give the song structure as Ratliff mentions when you add in more than a single note to a song.

In this song, the idea of the single note helps to provide for a stable beat that the song can build off of. The single note also gives a stable beat that the listener can dance to, which is the purpose of this kind of music. Dance.
