Take a look around your house to see if you own any examples of interesting or beautiful paper. What objects are it used? What color or texture is the paper? And where did you get a hold of it?

Just happened to have these lying around. The brown paper is a Tibetan handmade paper I used for endpapers in a handbook for barbers. It has rough edges typical of handmade paper and is reasonably strong with long fibers and no strong grain direction. It is diifcult to use for a paste down as it strectches in both directions. The marbled paper is hand marbled paper in the simple antique spot style. The paper is good quality but machine made wood pulp with a very strong grain direction. I used this paper for a book on Australian wines.

These belonged to my grandparents. They are watercolours, either Japanese or Chinese (like most Europeans I can't tell the difference!) and a date on a framing label on the back is smudged, but indicates October 192? (either 1920, 1925 0r 1928). Possibly bought at the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 -5 or in London at the same time. The paper is quite thin, with a slight texture , the pictures mounted onto a coarse green paper that may now be showing signs of acid decay. This has not affected the pictures.

I was given this notepad from my Japanese friends, who know how much I like writing little letters and notes to my friends. I like how I can use the lines either to write horizontally or vertically. It is a beautiful off-white paper with embossed patterns of flowers, tree branches and leaves. It is thicker than the regular paper and the patterns are in a slightly darker off-white shade. It is quite tangible, as the granulation of the paper can be just about felt under the fingers.

The title strips on the books appear to be real kumogami paper. The fan painting is not kumogami, but I thought it was an interesting mix of inspirations from various traditional paper decoration techniques, and it is certainly beautiful. I have just noticed, too, that the covers of these books are very glittery - just on one side of the paper; perhaps it has been coated with a mica layer

This technique prevents ink and paint from smudging and increases vividness).
Even if they have a colourful pattern, unfortunately I do not know in detail the technique that has been used for them. However, they are of unique beauty!

The very thin pastel coloured papers are Japanese Washi that I bought at the Nikkei Centre in Burnaby BC Canada. The copper coloured paper is a synthetic paper from Japan, purchased from Paper-Ya in Vancouver BC Canada. The black and white papers are from Africa, purchased from Ming Papers in Seattle WA USA. The reddish Turkish marbled paper is also from Paper-Ya. I don’t know what any of the natural fibres are. I bought them because I thought they were very beautiful and that I could use them in my printmaking (for making chine college etchings) and in making my artist books and enclosure portfolios and boxes.

Sorry, I don't have a photo to upload and share. My sample of paper is attached to a small notebook that seems it would be used as a diary or journal

The paper is lined and quite thin to the touch. It seems slightly yellowed as I believe this sample notebook is quite old. There are about 20 lines of equal length and the top border is about equal to the width 2 lines would make. The border line also uses a double line which makes it stand out nicely.

For me paper need to be both beautiful and functional. Here is a small selection of my 'paperwork'.

ON THE LEFT:
Is some lovely stationary in a very light cream colour with an illustration on top. The paper has texture and is thick; if it were man-made (it is not) I would say it was an imprint of a paper-mold. Perhaps the mold of the machine?

ON THE RIGHT:
I practice sheet I picked up from a museum (Meermanno in The Hague). It is a practice sheet for Western style calligraphy that was practiced by monks. It is very smooth and thin paper. Wildly illustrated.
