3. Specifically Practice Decoding

This is probably one of those times when your students will need some good old-fashioned practice. It’s not always fun, but practicing basic decoding skills can significantly improve word-attack and word-recognition skills. Once students have solid symbol imagery in place, they are ready to move on to practice with word lists. Here are six steps to try when you’re working one-on-one with students to practice decoding.A. Identify the vowel.
Try to have your student identify the vowel before he reads the word. This is especially helpful for young readers or those with very weak decoding skills.

A decoding strategy I find effective is when I give to the students a number of words from the lesson that I want them to recognize how to read and write, usually 5-10 words, and I ask them to write each word using 2 different colours. Red for the vowels and green for the consonants. By doing this, the students see the individual letters and are able to recognize them and sometimes even memorize them.
Dimitra

I give my grade one students cards with the letters of the alphabet since we have completed the Phonological Awareness instruction for all the letters. I ask each student to make a sound based on a letter. The rest of the students try to figure out which letter or letter pairings from the cards they are holding make/s that sound. The students really enjoy this method. It encourages them to decode using each letter.

Anna Nikol

Chat Conversation End

Type a message...

We have been working with letter names and sounds in my Kindergarten class. A large group activity/game we do is: I start by saying the sound of a letter and they walk around the class repeating the sound, having to find the letter in the class (on posters/songs up on walls, on a book cover, name card on a desk etc.). Once they find it, I ask for the letter name. We all repeat it. We keep track of right and wrong answers, if they, as a group, get a specific # right they all get a treat.
Helen

One strategy that i always enjoy to implement after instructing the new lesson is having the students underlying the unknown or difficult words on their books. After, i gather all the words on the board. Each student comes on the board to decode his unknown word, we learn the meaning and the student writes the syllables. Then the group says if they agree or not and after we correct we repeat by clapping each. What we do after is finding one more word that starts from the same letter and write it down. That way we create our word list (with words from our text and new ones) and next time students after studying at home have a small test in the class.

I begin my lessons with new vocabulary. I then do the reading ofthe week which implements the new vocabulary. I then have an assignment that uses the vocabulary, be it in the form of crossword, or sentence creation or games. For examples, when teaching direction, I use a map and ask students to describe how to get from point a to b using the words we learned (turn right. turn left, go strait...) We also emphasized these words in class by blindfolding one child and having the second child use the words of the day (left, right, straight & stop) to maneuver the child through a maze of desks. They had a blast!!.

I Make some errors of my own to help my students catch errors.Kids love it when their teachers make mistakes, even if they are “on-purpose” mistakes. sometimes I read the word incorrectly and ask the students if I got it right. Then I ask them to help me correct my mistake.

I really like all the ideas posted. In English school I like to get my students to define the words too. It brings in the extra skill of learning how to find the words in the dictionary too since it is done in alphabetical order. I am not sure if the older students in Greek School would like it
