It begins with the term racial injustice which is a powerful term to take apart and discuss. The story is told from dialogue of children of all colors. Hearing kids have the conversation is a powerful tool for our students to hear- questions should be asked, and the adults honestly answer in the story. The facilitator proceeded to call out statements to the students and asked them to step forward if a statement applied to them. Watching students in the video not step forward was a learning opportunity for those that almost reached the end of the race. The facilitator encouraged them that the statements had nothing to do with anything they have done. He then tells the students to turn around and look at the people who were still at the start line. They were shocked to learn that people are not treated equally because of their skin color. Even at 2 years old a child can become biased and by age 5, a child begins to choose certain friends based on their own race. We need to lead by example and guide children at the earliest age to learn empathy for all people. When we read books, don't just rush through what the author wrote, but pause and have conversation. The article has a lot of great activities to help teach and guide children to learn about "C is for color". The activities are written at a K level, but can be expanded to 2nd grade. We need to definitely build our classroom libraries for all children to make connections and to learn from. We need to celebrate diversity, not shy away from it. I think the main "spark" for me was recognizing that children are never too young to begin discussing racism. I like how the video addressed and challenged the notion of "children being colorblind." We need to work to see that our most valuable forms of community have a personal connection for young children instead of a social media pressure.
