Early Renaissance
Sculpture, contrapposto
St. Mark is in a beautiful contrapposto. He is standing on a pillow presumably to represent the linen workers who commissioned this work.
The middle class was starting to become wealthy and gain power during this time. This is why he stands on what historians’ think is a linen pillow to symbolize the linen worker family that commissioned this work. It is seen as a sense of civic pride.
Donatello makes this during a time where contrapposto was sort of lost, and by making this sculpture he helps to bring that back. You can see a realistic representation of the human anatomy.
Niche- a shallow recess in a wall to display a statue

Early Renaissance
Oil paint
St. Francis is receiving the stigmata.
There are no seraphims or gold rays but instead St. Francis looks illuminate by a more natural light.
The Early Renaissance is in full swing and artists are more interested in showing scenes in the Bible or in the life of Saints in a more natural way.
You see this combination of linear perspective and at the same time you are getting a sense of depth from the shadows and atmospheric perspective from the nature. The symbolisms in this piece are more “hidden” and not obvious for the viewer to see.

High Renaissance
Oil paint
In the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican
There are also some barrel vaults in the ceiling which point more towards Roman culture than Greek. Plato points up to symbolize how he believes more in Idealism, while Aristotle has his hand facing down symbolizing how he believes more in Realism.
This was during a time where artists had confidence in humanity and how we can accomplish great things. We can seek truth through philosophy as well as through religion.
You have such dynamic posses that look so real and the people look solid, like they have mass to them. It is a very intricate piece in how there is so much going on, and yet Raphael still creates this balance and harmony within the painting. There is great depth achieved through linear perspective.

High Renaissance
Oil paint/Tempera
Linear Perspective
There are so many little details in this painting that are rich with symbolism. Judas Iscariot is clenching the pieces of silver that were given him to betray Christ. Peter is holding a knife because he acts like Christ’s protector. All sorts of symbols and everyone is put so close together and that had not been done before in a depiction of Christ’s last supper.
People are trying to find the sense of the perfect and the eternal within the chaos that is the human experience.
Leonardo makes all the linear perspective point to Christ. The people in the painting move dramatically and with such emotion.

It has these perfect proportions and man in a way could replicate that on the earth.
Though it is a small building it has such perfect geometry and looks so solid.
Bramante uses a type of pillars called Tuscan columns.
Jean-Siméon Chardin. Soap Bubbles. ca. 1733

Rococo
Shortness of life
I really connected with Jean Simeon Chardin's "Soap Bubbles" made 1733-1734, which is odd because it was made in the Rococo era and I absolutely hate Rococo art. Yet, I think part of the reason I liked it so much when I first saw it was because it was made during that era. Rococo art is usually very sensual and overall sends not appropriate vibes. Then this painting pops up. It is of a middle class boy, who I say looks to be in the older teenage realm, who is just enjoying his day by blowing a bubble. A younger boy watches in the background who could be his younger brother. It just made me think about the little joys in life. Here you have a family who may not have the finest things in the world, yet they still enjoy themselves. We often feel we have to have the grandest and bests things in life in order to be happy, yet if that was true, then most of us would live very miserable lives, even the wealthy. Life is not about finding joy in the elaborate but in the simple and pure. We should each look to find joy in the small things in life: a beautiful flower, learning a fun new fact, or a moment with family that puts a smile on our face. To go from the lavishness of most Rococo paintings to this simple and humble moment filled me with much needed relief from the previous excessive paintings. I think that is what makes it timeless. It also put a much needed smile on my face. The bubble in the painting also symbolizes how life is short and temporal, it will not last forever (yet). We ought not to waste our lives away on the things that will perish but instead focus our time and energy on things that matter most, even if those things appear to be quite small in comparison.

Cubism
Some artistic influences on this work were that of cubism, and artists were also trying to get optical effects not so much by color but by rendering space. He also entered it into the exhibition Association of American Painters and Sculptors. Duchamp probably didn’t care too much for technology, but he could not deny the fact that that was where mankind was heading. He revealed that in his work by making the woman figure look and move robot like. All critics either didn’t like it or were shocked and disgusted by his painting. He painted the one thing art was never supposed to paint: the logic of industrial production.
