Uganda's Health Relationship with the USA

65% of the assistance that America gives to Uganda goes toward health. The U.S. focuses on defeating diseases like malaria, HIV, and AIDS. In 2011 alone, 285 million dollars was provided to uganda from the U.S. to prevent HIV and AIDS. Many laboratories in Uganda, including the Uganda Virus Research Institute are funded by the American government. A big part of the U.S. helping Uganda's health system is to prepare them for future emergency health problems. Uganda is very prone to disease outbreak because of where they are located in Africa. Disease is the leading cause of death in Uganda. This is the main reason that the average life span in Uganda is 25 years shorter than it is in America. Each year, 700,000 Ugandans receive antiretroviral treatment that is paid for by the U.S.. This type of treatment is life saving and keeps a portion of the Ugandan population alive. These are the reasons why the United State's main focus in Uganda is health of the people.
https://ug.usembassy.gov/embassy/health-programs/
https://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2963.htm

Uganda and the U.S. have a consistent supply of goods being imported and exported between each other. In 2015, Uganda was the 135th largest supplier of goods to the U.S.A. American goods that were imported from Uganda added up to be 64 million dollars. (2015). This was 40% more than it was in 2014. This amount has increased every year since 2005. Most likely, this will continue, so the trading with relationship between Uganda and America will continue to grow. the top imported goods are coffee, tea, and spice. The U.S. mainly imports agricultural goods from Uganda. Agricultural goods alone, made up 35 million of the 64 million dollars total. The U.S. trade surplus with Uganda is 25 million. Trade surplus is how much a countries exports, exceed their imports. As far as exporting, Uganda is the 146th largest exporter to the united States. The total amount that the U.S. exported from Uganda was 90 million dollars. the top exported categories between the two countries are aircraft, machinery, and medical tools. Although agricultural goods make up most of the imported goods between the two countries, they only make up 3 million dollars of the exported goods.
https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/africa/east-africa/uganda

Impeachment of Zafy (1993-1996)

Zafy was elected president in 1993, but was impeached from office in 1996. He had only a 3 year run. The reason was because he was said to be exceeding his powers.
After he had gained his presidency, he had overturned 17 years of military rule. During his 3 years, Madagascar had been $4 billion in debt and unable to meet interest payments. The government was trying to figure out ways to fix this problem. The prime minister had given his ideas on ways to help. Zafy had rejected the help and social cost of large-sector jobs and service cuts because he thought that it was nearly useless because half of the children living in madagascar suffered from retarded growth and acute malnutrition.
Not only had Madagascar been in debt, but the treasury had been losing more than it was gaining.
After trying to fire the prime minister, Zafy was finally impeached. Zafy had accused his rival in the presidential election of trying to use the impeachment against Zafy to make himself look better and an over $100 million plan to dumb toxic waste in Madagascar.
mg.co.za/article/1996-09-20-malagasy-president-impeached

The day they gained their independence was on October 9th, 1962. Their independence had come from Britain.
Uganda had a good 4 year start to their independence, and had not had many struggles in the beginning.
On May 24th, 1966, there had been a crisis that had caused the state to turn the guns on their own people. Ugandan army, led by Obote, was attempting to attack the King of Buganda´s palace. The reason behind this attempt was because they were trying to capture and kill him. Fortunately, Kabaka was able to escape the force and exile. Sadly, he had died where he had exiled and never returned to Uganda.
www.buganda.com/crisis66.htm

ugandahighcommissionpretoria.com/Political-History-of-Uganda.html

Uganda and the U.S. have a growing military relationship every year. the main deal is that if Uganda is in a time of trouble where they need military backup, the United States will step in. this goes both ways though, if the United States needs help, uganda will supply troops. The U.S. government knows that Uganda will not always have enough military to actually help, but this is why Defense Secretary Ash Carter visited Uganda on July 23, 2013. He set up this trip to make sure that the security partnership with Uganda was strong and continuing to grow. This trip specifically pointed out the conflict with Sudan, South Sudan, and The Republic of Congo. Uganda is not of the United States main military resources, but the two countries will continue to help each other and keep their relationship growing.

Madagascar and the United States have had a consistent military relationship with each other since the late 1800s. The main military assistance that the United States provides to Madagascar is through the MAP. ( Military Assistance Program) This program has provided millions of dollars, weapons, and technology to Madagascar. In 1990, the United States recognized that Madagascar needed to be made a main recipient of assistance. By 1993, Madagascar was receiving 40 million dollars a year. In 1989, they were only receiving 15 million for military support. The United States and Madagascar today still continue to support each others military, but are hesitant to send troops to help each other in a time of crisis. This does not mean that troops won't be sent, but are delayed.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/africa/ma-forrel-us.htm

Madagascar and the United States are involved in multiple same groups, and even have a treaty directly with each other. They are both a part of the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization. The first treaty between the two countries was signed in 1881. This was a peace treaty and it has not been broken since that time. As far as right now, there is no chance that this treaty will be expelled, and will probably be in place for many years. ( If not always).
https://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/5460.htm

The U.S. has provided an increase in population every year since 2006 for Madagascar. They include family planning programs and continuation of biodiversity. Defeating Malaria is one of the main focuses fir the United States when it comes to Madagascar. This is why there is the PMI. ( President's Malaria Initiative.) This not only helps Madagascar with malaria, but also poverty and child death. By the year 2020, the United States is hoping that they can eliminate malaria from Madagascar. ( Along with many other African countries.) The United States is also helping Madagascar with their production of food. Specifically farmers conditions so that they can produce healthy goods for their people. Madagascar is a very prone country to floods, and other natural disasters. The U.S. is not hesitant to help out, when these things happen. In 2014 alone, 36 million dollars was given to Madagascar for food and other necessities. Sadly, but human trafficking is a part of life in Madagascar. This problem is being dealt with by the country itself, but also the United States. They are working very hard together to lower the rate of human trafficking and get the Malagasy people more say in their government. Education is sometimes cut short for very many kids in Madagascar. This is why the USA has set a program that allows kids to focus on reading and writing at a very early age. This is to make sure that if the kids do drop out of school later in life, they have some of the requirements that they need to succeed out in the world.
https://www.antananarivo.usembassy.gov/development_assistance.html
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/africa/ma-forrel-us.htm
