Comparison: Craigslea State High School and Glenala State High School

Q1. Would you be at uni right now? Would you be studying Education?

Yes, I still think I would be. Certainly based on my experiences at Craigslea, of course it was made known that the school/teaching staff ‘preferred choice’ was that we as students all strived for an OP and pursued higher education, however, ultimately the choices I made in regards to my future career in high school were based upon my own personal dreams/desires. So for me, I was always going to strive for the results that would get me in to uni and enable me to study Education, because being a Teacher is what I have always aspired to be, and I personally don’t think that would have changed based on if I went to Glenala or not.

Q2. Would you value Education as much as you do now?

Yes I believe so still. Again, I strongly believe it is an opinion that is determined by an individual, although, depending factors (such as influence from parents/other family members) can contribute to alternating ones value on education. However, based on the information provided on MySchool in the ‘School Comments’ section, it would seem that Glenala SHS promotes a positive perspective on education, encourages students to apply themselves when learning, and as a school have resources available to assist with meeting the individual needs of students. So as a school I believe they are assisting students to see value in education, and on paper it would seem that they aren’t hindering students from forming this positive view/belief.

Q3. Would you be out in the work force instead, supporting yourself and possibly your family?

Based on the comparison above- most likely not? Purely because as per the statistics, the number of students in Employment post-school is at a low 9%, whereas the highest percentage of students (31%) are studying in VET/Vocational institutions.

Q4. How would your social life change?

(Unsure of what response you are looking for here- sorry!)

Q5. How would you home life change?

I guess in terms of the schools ICSEA value, a value of 907 isnt at the average, but it isn’t that far below it either. So whilst there may be some impacts on home life, I think it’s safe to assume that they wouldn’t all that substantial. I know in my situation, I work part time, study full time and still live at home, so I am still pretty dependent on my parents for that extra bit of income support. If our family situation was a little bit different, and for example, my parent/s/household relied on my income more, then yes, me being a full time uni student would greatly impact on life at home. In this case, I would most likely have to work full time and cut back to part-time studying, or put my plans to study on hold altogether.

- Aly S.

•Would you be at uni right now? Would you be studying Education?

Personally being a teacher has been my dream job, here for with my ability to stay on task I believe I will be here still studying education even if I attended Glenala State High School. I've had an amazing support system within my family to push me to strive to be where I am today.

•Would you value Education as much as you do now?

I believe that my value to Education has grown over the years. I have always and will always education and I believe that as a future teacher, all children should have a successful education.

•Would you be out in the work force instead, supporting yourself and possibly your family?

If I had attended Glenala State High School, I believe that I would still be in University as I have had that support from the beginning of my schooling life from my family.

•How would your social life change?

If I was to attend Glenala State High School, I believe that my social life would have changed dramatically if I was hanging out with the wrong people. I also believe that if I was hanging out with the wrong people, I wouldn't have had much of an interest in school and would have hardly went.

•How would you home life change?

My home life would have changed if I didn't have the support from my family and I had dreams to attend University, but didn't have the parent influences, I wouldn't have done it.

From you comparison, think about what your education and life might be like if you had attended a school like Glenala State High.

•Would you be at uni right now? Would you be studying Education?
If I went to Glenala SHS I believe I definitely would be studying education right now. Education is something that is part of my family and therefore I do not believe my schooling had a huge impact on whether I wanted to become a teacher.

•Would you value Education as much as you do now?
I think I may actually valued education even more if I was to go to a school like Glenala - which has a below average ICSEA score. In these schools I believe the effect of education is often more profound than in private schools like the one attended, where education is taken for granted and university is just something that "everybody does".

•Would you be out in the work force instead, supporting yourself and possibly your family?
No - as the school does not determine your SES, your SES often determines your school. Therefore I would still have the same family life.

•How would your social life change?

I believe my social life would have been different because I may have been exposed to challenges and influences before being ready for them. Unfortunately low socioeconomic standing also can breed different problems such as drug use and alcohol use at young age. Being exposed to these at a young age where I may not have been mature enough to know the consequences may have dramatically changed my now social life.

•How would you home life change?
Increased stress of attending Glenala SHS may have caused difficulties between me and my parents. Ultimately though I have no idea how my home life would be affected.

Demika Gilroy

-Would you be at uni right now? Would you be studying Education?
I think I would. I was influenced to study education through seeing the amazing influence my teachers had on my, and I am sure there are equally as wonderful teachers at Glenala State High School.

•Would you value Education as much as you do now?
It is difficult to say, my value for education comes from my parents so I think if I went to Glenala State High School, but had the same parents, than yes.

•Would you be out in the work force instead, supporting yourself and possibly your family?

I am in the workforce supporting myself at the moment, but perhaps since the work percentage in 9% at Grenala I wouldn't be? It seems to show that only 52% of students that attended Grenala are dong something post school.

•How would your social life change?
Growing up in a low socio economic area my parents surrounded me with extra curricular activities. I think because of who my parents are my social life wouldn't have changed that much.

•How would you home life change?
Again I am not sure, in order to change my home life I would have to change more than just my school.

Ashlee Smale
