Define: Core Beliefs/Vision Statement

A basic core belief I have about a student’s ability to achieve is that all students have the ability to achieve. It may take more work for some students than others due to a variety of factors (such as socio-economic status, generational trauma and home environment,) however I believe that with the right amount of assistance, any child can succeed. As such, I believe a school counselor’s role as an advocate is to make sure each student has an equitable chance to succeed academically and advance their lives to become an upstanding citizen. Personally, I also aspire to help students become more socially and culturally aware in the process. I plan to do this by establishing a school counseling program that focuses on the importance of diversity, while also building up a student’s self image. Specifically, because I plan to work at an international school, I find that a lot of countries tend to focus on western standards of beauty; as such I want to emphasize that just because something is the norm, doesn’t mean it’s ok. I want to let these students know that they are beautiful and capable as they are.

Based on all of the information I provided, my vision statement as a school counselor would be: No matter a student’s situation, they will become culturally aware professionals, that will insight social change and thus change the world a little at a time.

Deliver - Implicit Association Test Reflection

Out of all the Implicit Association Tests, I decided to take the Asian IAT and the Disability IAT. I specifically chose the Asian one because I wanted to see if I had any bias against myself as a fellow Asian American. My results showed that I have a moderate automatic association with Americans with European American and Foreign with Asian American. This admittedly surprised me as an Asian-American. I had thought I had already resolved the crisis I had with my identity as an American in this country, but I guess I didn’t. Growing up I had always struggled with feeling American enough, yet somehow also Asian enough. As I got older, I had slowly come to accept that someone could be both Asian and American, but based on the results, there’s still a bit of bias in me. As for the Disability IAT, I chose it because I'm unsure what my stance is on this. I like to think I treat disabled people fairly and see them equally, but I can’t help but have that nagging fear in my head that I don’t. My goal is to treat them with equity, but I wonder if I toe that line of equity and pity. My results for that test was: a slight automatic preference for physically abled people over physically disabled people. I was a bit relieved to see that even though a bias did exist, it wasn’t a stark one favoring one over the other. I plan to try and stay on top of my implicit bias when working with clients by staying mindful of the little things I say and do. As well as, focus on the individual as a person.
