I know that a dysfunctional earth is an empty world that is uninhabitable for the current living creatures.

 It will probably be like this because of how we have been impacting it. I think this is happening as the earth is unable to replenish its resources quick enough.

I know that a dysfunctional earth is also a planet where there is a lot of violence and no one and nothing is given their basic necessities or rights. 
This might occur because of terrorism, bad security, illegal wildlife trade and poverty.
I know that it can also be a place where many people live in poverty and very few have decent work and careers.
This might occur because of a lack of jobs that are safe and fulfilling.
