Quotes of today:
" As a teacher you have to teach the kids to know, to care and to act"
"Behind every object there is a story to tell"

What I am going to take home from today is rather practical approach for the international class I teach. In this class there are 8 guest students from different European countries who stay at our school for one year together with their German host partners. Most of our guest students come to Germany to improve their German language skills, but I really liked Rita's idea of a language consultant and the emphasis of learning from each other. So I am quite happy to try that when I will be back home, learning some phrases in other European languages together with my students.

- There is no one way to do the same thing.
- Globalization is not just happening now, but it has happened in the past. Now it's happening faster. For example, ''kokle'' is considered a traditional instrument in Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Norway, etc. Each place is said to have originated from each particular country and to other places it has been imported.
- When the baby is born, a tree is planted and when the child grows up, the tree is cut down and the tool is made. This instrument is not meant to be played in front of others, it is more for meditation.
- Drums consists of 3 Spirits: Spirit of tree (the body of the instrument), spirit of the animal (top of the instrument), spirit of the man (who plays the instrument). As a result, drums are considered a sacred instrument and should be treated as such.
- Music is not just for fun. It has a much greater role and influence. Music heals.
- Important - to know, to care, to act.
- As the waves smooth out volcanic rocks, so we are smoothing ourselves by getting to know different cultures.

Culture has a lot to tell you!

Music is culture. Music is a privileged vehicle for spreading the culture of a country and a people. Music carries the history, values, heritage, language, and dreams of a country. Music is a form of cultural expression that can be disseminated at school by bringing students closer to other cultures. I remember perfectly in Portugal when Kizomba - typical music from the African continent - came to be appreciated and brought closer to African culture.
Shall we share culture? Let's know more about Portuguese music? I leave you a learning scenario to be used in your classes.

The most popular music in Portugal is Fado. Fado is a Portuguese musical style. It is usually sung by one person (fadista) and accompanied by a classical guitar (in Fado circles called viola) and a Portuguese guitar. Fado was elevated to the category of Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in a declaration approved by the VI Intergovernmental Committee of this international organization.

The diva to the Fado is Amália Rodrigues. She has become known worldwide as the Raínha do Fado (Queen of Fado) and, consequently, due to the symbolism that this musical genre has in Portuguese culture, she was considered by many as one of its best ambassadors in the world. Let yourself be enchanted by this singular voice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU-Z0SiQKgU

The traditional Portuguese instrument is the Portuguese Guitar. The Portuguese guitar is descended from the zither of western Europe. Once a very popular instrument, with numerous models during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, only a few models survived until the 19th century: the English guitar, in England and the north of France; the zither from Thuringia, in Germany; the Portuguese mandolin and the Portuguese guitar. How about this instrumental composed by Portuguese Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, and Bass?

https://youtu.be/jPjmBt6d4GE?t=1562

More recently, other fado singers have carried the weight of singing and spreading this Lusitanian symbol. Mariza, Cuca Roseta, Ana Moura, Raquel Tavares, Marco Rodrigues, Camané, among others, are the voice of Portuguese culture. Let yourself be seduced by the feeling of the voices of these artists.

https://youtu.be/jPjmBt6d4GE?t=1119

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOenpOEVTgw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjj6aoZKh7k

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYeZu_zw9Sg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k98TaLF4hxA (dedicated to you all)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaJLcSVivAA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyiRDKcNaJQ

To talk about Portuguese music is to talk about the sea. This imposing symbol of nature. I leave you with Dulce Pontes - Canção do Mar (Sea Song). This song represents the whole Lusitanian soul. ❤️
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298tez_wJCU

All cultures have their typical beliefs, norms and values, which are constantly changing. These can be transformed in response to intrinsic or extrinsic changes, seeking to reconcile contradictions by accelerating the process of evolution. Today the nostalgic sounds and rhythms of the sea and wind have made palm trees dance, awakening "saudade"...

Today we spoke about music and differents instruments as possibility to express yourself and as connecting culturel theme. Every culture have their own way to express in music. Very often different cultures sing about same things. There is not only one way to do one thing. I like the story that when a child is born, people plant a tree, when this person dies, the wood of this tree will be used to make a wooden instrument. Nice picture for me. Quote of the day: know, care, act!

Know, care and act.
I learned today about the close connections between musical instruments from various countries and how music connects us though we are not always consciously aware of it.
The text about teaching multicultural groups also provided a number of helpful insights, e.g. that even in a rural small town community like ours there is a lot of cultural diversity. I also found the statement that those teachers who are "warm demanders" are the most successful very inspiring.
