How can Constructivism be applied to dance?

One of the ways that I can apply constructivism in a dance classroom is instead of sticking to a strict schedule to customize the schedule to the students needs and pay attention to what they need to spend more time on and then take that time so they learn the material or the steps. Another aspect that dance implies all the time is the interactive part and building on what the students know. With dance they get to participate and they are constantly improving and building their technique. One other thing is that my role as a teacher can be interactive. I can dance with the students and create an open dialogue with them.

PBJ is when students work for an extended period of time and develop skills and knowledge in the challenge of the project. I think a project that comes into each dance class is a choreography project. To create a piece and then continuously work on it they are developing skills as they continue to workshop. With reflective assignments along the way the students will be able to assess and reflect on what they are doing, how they think it is going, and what the have learned and explored. Individual choreography when worked on for a long time will show a students authenticity and their voice as a choreographer.
https://www.bie.org/about/what_pbl

A learning strategy where students learn from fixing a problem while working in a group. One of the common uses of this in a dance room is during technique. This is when you pair up or assign groups of dancers and they will watch each other perform the dance and then give feedback and work on fixing problems. I think that another way that this could be done would be to present the students with a piece of choreography and ask them to solve a problem within the choreography. Then they work together to find different solutions and find a solution that they think could work best.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem-based_learning

This is facilitated by the teacher by asking questions and getting the students to look for answers. This could be done by asking them to look into something from dance history with a new historicism perspective. They generate and create their own questions. Then they spend time doing research and finding answers to their questions. In the end they will do a presentation on the information they found and the new knowledge that they created. Another example is to show them a work of art and have them create questions to understand what the work is about. For example look at a dance and instead of telling them what the intent is have them analyze the dance and ask questions to find the answers and understand the choreography.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquiry-based_learning

These are activities or lessons that are similar to what they will face out in the real world. As a teacher an activity or lesson that I can prepare them for is an audition. In a dance class it would be a dance audition however the same concepts can relate to any job, school, or research interview. The students would prepare a resume, and then come dressed appropriately. They would sign in and get a number or a name tag. They would learn a dance and then they would audition it in small groups. The next class they would come and do professional interviews. (very common for commercial dance jobs). This activity would give them experience and help them develop skills that would help them land their dream job.
http://authenticactivitiespsychologyoflearn.blogspot.com/2012/04/definitions-of-authentic-activities.html

This is a teaching and learning style where you break up the students into groups and then one person from each group will focus on a specific idea and then they will go and teach the other students. For this I would number students 1-5 and then I would teach them all a combination. Then I would have the 1's work on level changes. 2's on timing. 3's on dynamic. 4's on space. 5's on repetition. Each number would have a video example and a written source to learn about their specific idea and then as a group they would work to apply that idea or element to the combination that they worked on. Then they would mix back up so that there was 1 of each number in each group and they would teach the rest of the group what they had learned by telling them and then demonstrating the element in the dance.

For a dance class there are a few ways that I would incorporate service learning. I think that one would be to get the special needs class from the school and have the students create a dance that incorporated that student. Another would be to go to an elementary school and dance with the younger students. In either of these they could create a dance that featured that student or they could choose a common story like goldie locks and the 3 bears and act that out with movement. I think that this would teach them the value of serving and the joy that dance and learning can bring into others lives. while providing them with a challenge of creating with people different than they are used to.
