The transcendentalism were trying to redefine freedom in a changing world. They argued that freedom resided in an individual's power to remake oneself and maybe even the world. As American grew more prosperous, women, slaves, and the wage working men recognized that the Market Revolution left them with much less freedom than they might have. more and more technology was being invented to increase production and improve transportation. the railroad was the greatest invention creating during the market revolution by speeding shipping time. As well as factories to have all workers in one place working on different tasks instead of being home working anything at any given time without any stress.

"Glorify god and enjoy him forever" (Thoreau 40)."i have always been regretting that I was not as wise as the day I was born"(Thoreau 94-95). these quotes can indicate on what he accepts his idea and not what is actually happening around him. He never listen to anyone of their thoughts and their advice but ignores them and ask himself questions that goes with what the person said to him. he wishes to understand more on his deep thoughts of the forest and nature on what its purpose is.

"Pray tell me anything new that has happened to a man any where in this globe-and he reads it over his coffee and rolls, that a man had his eyes gouged out this morning on the Wachito River" (Thoreau 76). He sees his society as not what a civilized should be. The civilized people are growing in population, building roads, dams, and bridges destroying nature as he once saw it.

Thoreau isn't satisfy with how the beauty of nature isn't so special to attract him. he also isn't happy about how people goes up to him and say that he shouldn't be lonely all the time and to be around folks especially in rainy and snowy days and nights. Thoreau is tempted to reply to those statements saying that the world we establish in has many misunderstood question that hasn't been answered. Some include why he should feel lonely, is the planet not inside of the milky way, and what sort of space is that which separate a man from his fellows and makes him solitary.
