I don't really see call and response used like the one in the chapter in my student teaching. The closest thing that I can recognize is that after a few months of teaching these students my CT is able to tell when they're having issues or they need help. She has enough observations to tell. I would say this is an implicit call and response. For example, Noah, she is able to tell when he is about to ask to go to the nurse because he does certain behaviors that she is in tune with.

I have asked students how they are doing and solicited responses via thumbs up, thumbs in the middle, or thumbs down. This provides a kind of collective response to the call. Then I've asked students if they want to explain their choice of thumb position, which sometimes then results on more individual responses. It is hard to know how best to respond when students share things, sometimes, e.g. without conforming to the IRE (Initiate-Respond-Evaluate) pattern.

I've actually witnessed a similar relationship from the text to one in my CT classroom. One student has ADHD and has a difficult time sitting still so when she noticed that he's moving around too much to where it's distracting for the class, she'll just put her hand to signal this to him. He also often answers her question to himself or me while I'm observing if he isn't picked to share his answer with the class.

I would say that my cooperating teacher uses call and response techniques often, especially when it comes to checking in with her student's interests/plans for the weekend/questions about their home lives/ how they're feeling. Call and response is a main way that she builds relationships with students. EX: there is a student in my cooperating classroom who is outgoing at times, but mostly doesn't want to engage in class. Through specific call and response techniques my CT was able to understand why. School is his time to relax and have quiet time, because his family has 12 kids in it!

As a future teacher, I could see myself utilize journaling as a technique similarly to how the teachers featured in Writing and Teaching to Change the World have. I find that for me, writing can be therapeutic and can provide me time to reflect on whatever is going on in my life.
