Welcome to second year bilingual practicum! 👏🏽 Estoy muy emocionada de poder trabajar con ustedes este semestre. I cannot wait to learn from each other and support you in whichever way that I can. Please know that I am here for you!

Feel free to write in whichever language(s) you wish to! Add a section for your intro! 🤩

☝🏼 I'll start:
* My name is Marina Velásquez (she/hers/ella) and I was born in Lima, Perú.
* Actualmente, enseño en Jackson Heights, Queens. I am a third grade dual language self-contained teacher and I absolutely love it!
* Mis aficiones incluyen descansar (as educators, this is so important!), reunirme con mis amigos y familia, y leer un buen libro.
* Mis padres se mudaron a Nueva York primero, y nos trajeron a mi hermana y a mí cuando yo tenía 7 años. Although it was definitely a shift, I was lucky enough to have incredible teachers who I not only learned so much from, but who also made me feel welcomed and loved. I wanted to do the same for future generations. While my goal to become an educator was set pretty early on, it wasn't until college that I discovered what kind of educator I wanted to be. One of my professors introduced me to bilingual education and sent me to observe a second grade bilingual classroom. Instant flashbacks of 7-year-old Marina (who did not speak a lick of English) came crawling back to my head as I watched the teacher speak to some of her students in their home language - español. But, that's not all! I also watched students- whose home language was not español - reading, writing and even speaking in español, too! That's when I knew - I would be a bilingual educator. When things get tough (and they so have these past few years!), I think about two things: 7-year-old Marina and the beautiful students I am lucky to have. Throughout this course and your career, I encourage you to keep whatever your own drive may be in mind and remember - I am here for you!

🌸 Looking forward to reading your introductions and meeting you in-person during sesión 2!

My name is Amaya.

I identify with she/her/Ella pronouns.

I usually write my name with "I" since it is the correct Basque spelling of my name. In my legal documentation is written with a "Y" because back when I was born the names still were governed under the Franco dictatorship rules and my parents had to spaniarize the name to have me registered by that name.

As for my background, I am an immigrant from the Basque Country in Spain. I came to this country to complete my bachelor’s in economics and International Business. Through this experience, I know firsthand about the challenges and excitement involved in learning a new language and adapting to a different culture.

Additionally, I have significant experience working with adult educational programs from when I was technical assistant in the financial field, as well as in the hospitality industry.

Theater is my passion and I have also worked as a theater director assistant in an after-school theater program at P.S 132’s Alianza Dominicana Art Center, which exposed me to vocal and movement techniques and the essential art of discipline through the creative process.

My role was to conduct training and supervise students and track their progress. Through my work as a financial and entrepreneur technical assistant for the Latino community in Philadelphia, I was able to teach and train adults to decode and maneuver complex terminology and bureaucratic processes related to business startups including financial documentation requirements, license requirements, business model and canvas preparation, budgeting. This community has little to non-English literacy. So, I employed bilingual education strategies and I used their background as a vehicle to help them break down complex language and ideas by choosing terminology and scenarios that were closer to them.

These experiences have led me to seek a more substantial role in the academic and social development of diverse immigrant communities. That is the reason why I embarked into the NYC Teaching Fellowship journey.

During the 2021-2022 school year I was teaching a 1st grade in dual language program and this year I will be teaching 4th grade and I will be transferring to a different school and district.

I am deeply committed to providing the highest levels of academic and social- emotional support to each of my students and will strive to help them develop into independent learners with confidence to move forward in their academic career.

I was born here in the US but my background is Chileno.
- Last year I was a 4th grade bilingual math and science teacher and rumor has it that I will be teaching in third grade in the boogie down Bronx.
- I am passionate artist that likes to create whatever may inspire me. (most of the time that could be doodles of dinosaurs or monsters)
- Being a Bilingual teacher runs in my blood, my mother is currently a bilingual teacher in CT and as hard as I try to not be like my parents, I inadvertently followed in both their footsteps. Yes this means my father is a math teacher. SMH
In all seriousness I grew up in CT where I didn't have any role models that looked or sounded like me. Not until I was older and helping out my parents at times, is where I saw that I could be the kind of teacher that the next generation of latino students needed, to encourage them towards their best selves.
