The fall in demand and increase in supply reinforced each other to cause a large decrease in equilibrium price. The greater the fall in demand and increase in supply, the more significant the fall in price P. However the effect on equilibrium quantity is indeterminate and depends on the relative extent of the fall in demand and rise in supply. If fall in demand exceeds rise of supply, quantity falls. If rise in supply exceeds fall in demand, quantity rises.

The price of substitutes, which are robusta coffee beans, are relatively cheaper compared to the more luxurious arabica coffee beans, because of the increase in production of robusta coffee beans in vietnam. Thus when the price of substitutes decreases, the demand for arabica beans decreases, ceteris paribus.

When there is a recession in developed countries such as Brazil, consumer's income falls, which results in the fall of purchasing power. Hence they would prefer to purchase inferior goods such as robusta coffee beans, which decreases the demand for arabica beans.

In response to the high prices of 2011 Brazilian farmers invested heavily in new acreage and improved yields with better husbandry and more fertiliser. Futhermore, Vietnam has gone from growing almost nothing a decade ago to producing 25m bags of robusta beans a year today. Hence, there is an oversupply of coffee.

Please remember to write your name before the statement :)

Lastly, please identify these non-price determinants of demand & supply by quoting the relevant phrases from the article.

For example, as stated in article 1, "the recession in Europe has hit demand".
