Salmonella is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract and is one of the most common types of food poisoning. A few varieties of Salmonella bacteria result in typhoid fever, a sometimes deadly disease that is more common in developing countries. Salmonella is typically caused by contaminated food such as raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and unpasteurized milk. Salmonella can also be caused by contact with infected animals. Anyone can get Salmonella, but you might be at higher risk for infection or serious illness depending on your age, your living conditions and certain illnesses and medications. Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, chills, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. The best way to prevent Salmonella is by practicing good hand hygiene, sanitizing, and cooking your food thoroughly. When treating Salmonella, most people only need fluids to recover in less than a week, but severe infections may require medical care, including IV fluids and sometimes antibiotics.
