My musical identity...

My first musical loves I developed through the Catholic Church, a major component of my childhood, and musicals such as the Sound of Music and the Phantom of the Opera. I do still love those beautiful Catholic hymns despite now identifying as an atheist. The Sound of Music and The Phantom of the Opera are, however, still a regular tune you'll hear from me.
Aside from the musicals and hymns, I would say I identify most with the softer styles of music. I enjoy quite a few gentle piano pieces by many different pianists. My all-time favorite artists are Sufjan Stevens, Ben Howard, Sleeping at Last, Nahko and Medicine for the People, just to give a handful. Softer styles of music are my go-to preferences however I do really enjoy pop songs, R&B, country, and pop punk music. The draw to these songs is not so much the intimate feel of the music, but the fun and uplifting beat they often carry with them.

Sense of Self and Culture I

Culturally I identify most strongly as an ex-Catholic. It is one thing to have parents who just call themselves Catholics and maybe go to church on Easter and Christmas, but it is a complete other end of the spectrum when you attend Mass twice or more weekly, attend a Catholic school where from a very early age Catholicism is a part of the curriculum and taught as they are universal, undisputed Truths (they are absolutely not.) This shapes a child. Religion was a not only a very important sector of my life, it pretty much was my entire identity. I carry that with me and appreciate some facets of Catholicism such as they music.

....I do not exactly identity myself strongly with the music I listen to because I really don't stay in one category of music. I like soft, maybe sad, and gentle music, but I'll listen to a song completely outside what I normally do, and I'll really identify with it. For example, my girlfriend really enjoys acoustic punk, and pop punk music like The Front Bottoms and Neck Deep. I never thought I could agree with her music taste, but now they contest as some of my favorite artists. Our tastes in music are always expanding and testing new palates. Another example would be my interest in Native American music. My girlfriend is Apache Native American, and as a result I have newfound interest in music created from Native artists. Music as my identification of self has roots, but the branches are constantly reaching outward.
