The kind of boy Mafatu is a brave and determent boy. In the text it says, " Ẅere going away, Uri," he wispered fiercely. Off to the south there are other islands. This shows me that Mafatu could not take being laughed and judged at just for being afraid of water, and so this is why he said he was going to go look for others islands to see if he maybe just belongs, which he does not. But really he had to face a lot of his fears and right when he wanted to tell his dad something Mafatu died. I bet he was going to tell his dad how BRAVE he was.

Mafatu is a brave boy, because he had the courage to leave Hikeuru on a canoe by himself and face his fear of the sea. His motivation of making his father proud pushes him to be braver than he would have ever been if he didn't have that motivation. Also, he musters up the courage to steal a spear from the sacred place that the eaters-of-men had. Along with that, he killed an octopus, dove down into the sea to retrieve his knife, and killed a boar. What kind of boy is Mafatu?
Mafatu has a bunch of ways I could describe him, but there is some I cannot leave out. Mafatu never gives up. And he is a boy who cares about peoples thoughts, and who cares about peoples opinion. In the text is tells us how people could laugh at Mafatu for being such a baby, and so he tried to change that. I think Mafatu was brave after he changed his whole personality.

The hammerhead approached the raft in leisurely fashion; it rolled over slightly, and its gaping jaws seemed to curve in a yawning grin. What manner of fisherman would he grow up to be?¨ This shows me that Mafatu doubts himself, and upset at who he is. 

At the end of the story, Mafatu is a completely different person. Hes brave, fearless, and proud of himself. In the text his father says ¨Mafatu, Stout Heart. The question: What kind of boy is Mafatu?


 Answer: I think Matafu is a strong and kind boy because he has a lot of courage but the only think that makes him a coward is the sea because he has a bad memory with the sea and he also lost his mother in it. In the text, " Little wavelet lapped and chuckled about the hull like beckoning hands. He looked over side. Deep down in those cool depths it seemed to him that he could see faces ...his mother's, perhaps.... He flashed his hand across his eyes.". Think makes me think that he just gets bad memory's and that is the only thing that stops him.
