The conflict between the Patricians and the Plebians was a political struggle for power over the government. Originally the Plebians elected to government officials that were called Tribunes. They had the power to intervene in all political matters. The Patricians promoted Rome's first set of laws called the Twelve Tables. Plebians became eligible to hold almost all political offices and gained the right to have one of the consuls come from their rank. Plebians won the power to make decisions binding in all of Rome. The constitutional compromises from the Twelve Tables eased tensions between the Plebians and the Patricians. The Plebians were the common people whereas the Patricians were the elite class of Rome.

During the early 15th century B.C.E, the Plebeians threatened to secede from Rome and establish a rival settlement. The Patricians granted the Plebeians to elect officials known as tribunes. The Plebeians originally chose 2 tribunes but that number eventually rose to 10. Although the tribunes provided a voice in government for the Plebeians, the Patricians continued to dominate Rome. Tension continued to grow between the classes and eventually, the Plebeians were able to hold almost all state officers and gain the right to have one of the consoles come form their reins. By the early 3rd century, the Plebeians dominated assemblies which broadened the base of political participation.

The early Roman society, like any other societies at the time, was heavily Patriarchal. Men practically ruled over everything, leaving women with little to no say in that matter. But, when the Roman expansion occurred and the Constitution fell, things started to shift. Women now had more equal rights, higher power and status and could actually even participate somewhat in there own government. But, like it always it with theses things, only the upper class women could afford to do so.
