The practices of Jainism should not be generalized since all Jains are not exactly the same. For example: Many young Jains in the United States are vegan, however, many Jains that are located in India are vegetarians that consume dairy products. Jains all over the world demonstrate their faith through different practices, therefore, the religion itself cannot be essentialized and generalized as a whole. In America, ethics are expressed through the idiom of environmentalism and animal rights. In India renunciatory ex Jain ethics refine the ascetic ideals of the purification of the soul and liberation.

Jainism is a religion that practices non-violence even to one-sensed beings such as the four elements. In other words, Jains are not able to walk outside while its raining, go for a swim, burn wood to create a fire, dig the earth, walk on vegetation, and bathe. Jains are also only able to drink boiled water since by boiling the water, they are able to take the life form out of the eater. Ascetics avoid walking on insects in order to avoid any deliberate violence on those beings. Additionally, they are mostly vegetarian since their diet can also be a factor that can cause Karma and violence unto others.

Lord Indra, King of heavenly gods, praised a merciful human king, Megharath. Lord Indra stated that the king would sacrifice himself to protect those around him. Two doubtful demigods disguised themselves as a pigeon and a hawks. The pigeon flew unto Megharath's lap, shaking in fear. The hawks came right after it and started speaking. The hawks told the king that the pigeon was its food. However, Megharath tried satisfying the hawks appetite with his own flesh instead. Once the hawk demanded the same weight of flesh as the pigeon, Megharath put the pigeon on one side of the scale and then his whole body on the other. Demonstrating that he would sacrifice his own body in order to safe a mere pigeon. The demigods showed their true forms and praised Megharath for his selflessness. Later the soul of King Megharath became the sixteenth Tirthankar, Lord Shäntinäth

One does not simply convert to Jainism by saying they are changing religions. In order to actually become a part of a religion, one needs to absorb and discuss the stories surrounding the religion. Stories are a major part that make up a religion. Stories have been told for centuries, and these stories carry the essence of the religion itself. Once you understand the stories, you are able to understand Jainism in a deeper level and truly become a believer.

Mimamsaka makes a distinction between seen and unseen fruits. Punya is karmic merit. Unreciprocated gift constitutes an "instrument of salvation." Therefore, when Jains give to ascetics they expect that they will get karmic merit, but giving to a random passerby will have no effect in retrospect to their karmic merit. Jains receive karmic merit by giving to ascetics since the ascetics embody true Jainism.

If the couple were separated for even a minute, they longed for each other. Priyamkara fell deeply ill and Sundari would not eat, talk nor bathe, but would only shed tears. Once Priyamkara died, Sundari could not accept the fact that he had passed away and did not let his family cremate the corpse. She took the corpse away to a cemetery and kept treating it as if Priyamkara was still alive. Her father seeked the help of Prince Ananga. Ananga brought a corpse to the cemetery next to Sundari and treated the corpse as his wife. He wanted to make her believe that they were in the same situation. At the end she tricked her to believe that both corpse ran away, but he actually threw them down a well. He persuaded her to learn more about the Jain Doctrine.
