Virtual Pop-Up Studio by Finger, Makayla Rachel

This pop-up studio is targeted for kids in third grade. The focus of play is in the science area because there is so many ways to express creativity in experimenting that is overlooked. They would be around 8-9 years old and around the age where they begin more state-mandated tests and I feel, have less time to focus on being a kid and engaging in play. This board is focused on hands-on learning which entails trying new things, working as a team, and problem solving. By implementing hands-on learning children gain confidence in their ability to work alone or together to solve problems, learning how to describe and explain strategies, and become more involved in their learning.

When kids play with the amount of dirt, water, and seeds they put in a pot they are able to imagine how that plant will grow. Each pot would be unique and likely grow different. Once the plants are grown they will be able to experiment and observe with the plants and see what helps them grow.

From using different sizes of objects, all with different weights and shapes, kids are able to play with how each move. They are able to drop them and roll them, and explore the properties of each. Children strengthen their ability to work as a team by all dropping the objects at the same time from the same height so they can observe the differences in speed. They can also strengthen their ability to try new things as there are so many possibilities of items to observe motion in and for kids to play with movement.

As you can see the kids are the ones exploring and they have their own goals and they work together and individually to accomplish them. Towards the end it mentions the kids were organizing how to sell their produce at a farmers market and I love the idea of their creativity throughout the life of the garden and even after with working together and coming up with their own ideas.

This video shows how to make an oil and water bottle. When making this activity, I envisioned the kids not knowing that the two separate and having them make them (with assistance as needed) and be able to watch what happens for theirselves and ask questions why and let them try to think about why before a lesson about density and the properties of water. This activity would allow them to be creative with how much of each they want, what colors they want to add, and create questions and use their imagination to come up with the reasons this happens.

This video is demonstrated with a classroom that appears to be younger and learning about gravity. For this lesson, I am focusing more on the water bottle drop where one was heavier and the other was lighter both falling at the same speed. This activity could allow for more creativity if the kids each picked how much water/rocks/sand/etc. they wanted to add or what other objects they wanted to test. They could also add obstacles such as a fan blowing or a paper the object would hit before reaching the ground.

This article highlights how playing with water can benefit children. The Exploration and Learning section is what I mainly focused on in this pop-up studio. When I thought about the children experiencing what happens to objects in water, I wanted them to look carefully at what differences they noticed with the size and qualities of the different objects looking through water and dry. This nurtures creativity as it encourages children to make observations and describe why they think something is happening.

This article shows what is needed and how it nurtures creativity to allow children to figure out how they want to plant the garden. In this article it says how to let the children decide how deep to dig the holes, how much to water, how close to put the seeds together. I fully believe this is part of the experience for the kids and a lot of how to get their creativity going and their team work encouraged. Each kid having a slightly different planting style can show how much or little difference the different styles made.
