Look Both Ways is a collection of short stories that are connected and take place in a middle school. Friendship plays a major part in all these stories and they usually have to get over a challenge. This book could also feel really relatable while reading it. These stories are about friendship and how friends have each others backs.

Theme Exploration

In "The Low Cuts" the characters explore friendship. A quote from "The Low Cuts" that could help prove this is, "That was the last John John Trey spoke before Bits fist fist went in his mouth so fast fast"(Reynolds 24). Bit stood up for his friend who was getting bullied for his birthmark which caused his hair to be grey in certain spots. Bit may have not had the best way of solving the problem but he stood up for his friend out but he did and thats what matters. You want friends who are willing to take a risk to help you out. A quote that from " Five Things Easier Than Simeon And Kenzi's Secret Handshake "that could also help with this is , ""Exactly. You my brother" Kenzi confirmed, bouncing the blue ball as they approached Chestnut street"(Reynolds 106). Kenzi considers Simeon his brother which means that they are very close. Friends that are very close tend to stay together the rest of there life. When they walk home they are allowed to be them selves, talk about what they like, and really just have fun with each other with out the opinion of other people.

Character Analysis

In "5 Things Easier to do Than Simeon and Kenzi's Secret Handshake" there are two friends Simeon and Kenzi. Kenzi is a really short for his age and Simeon is a giant for his age. They knew each other because their older brothers were best friends. These two are best friends now and hang out all the time and created a hand shake made of many different hand signals and some of it is in ASL or American Sign Language the part in ASL means "I can here you even when the wold can't". A quote that supports that they are best friends is ""Anyway, like is was saying. We family""(Reynolds 106). They are best friends and close enough to consider each other family and it normally takes awhile for someone to do that so you can tell that they went way back.

In "Water Booger Bears" there is a symbol and it is called a "Friendship Flags" or "The Litter of Love". These are empty Chip bags that have been flattened to fit in between the vent in the locker. Tons of these stacked up in Jasmines locker because everyday while she was in the hospital TJ would put 1 in her locker. She was in the hospital for 30 days or 1 month so she had 30 "Friendship Flags". Two quotes from "Water Booger Bears" are "But Jasmine and TJ called them "Friendship Flags". The Litter of Love"(Reynolds 3). and "Her parents' coldness thawed by the one and only TJ, who would show up, crack some jokes, break some ice, and leave some empty potato chip bags next to Jasmine's bed to add to the thirty he'd left in her locker"(Reynolds 9).

Personal Reflection & Conclusion

Look Both Ways is a book that you can relate to. You are always hanging out with friends and having fun. But they run into problems that friends can run into like how Jasmine was sick in the hospital and TJ had to spend time with her at the hospital sense she was out of school or how Simeon was getting made fun of by Fredo and Kenzi told him to chill. A thing that you notice if you are reading this book is that no story has one main character, they have two or more to symbolize or prove these stories are about friendship and how Friends got each others backs.
