Key concepts

This project aims to capitalise on the interdisciplinary research and learning potential of an art museum-based collaborative event, involving key academics and research students from the areas of Virtual Architecture, Computer Science, Art Curatorial Studies and Arts Management. The key driver for the collaborative exchange of ideas is the concept of 'Museum Futures'.

The project will evolve in stages, beginning with a single-day exploratory 'exchange and making' event to be held at the Potter during the 2014 Academic Year. It is hoped that this event will inspire a variety of ideas and approaches to the topic, some of which may be advanced in single-disciplinary or multi-disciplinary research projects, at different levels of complexity and scale, from single-semester/single student research projects through to multi-participant/longer term funded projects.

Single day Museum Futures event

This event will take the form of a collaborative exploratory exchange and making event at the Ian Potter Museum of Art. Invitees will include IPMoA Academic Programs and senior staff as appropriate, academics and graduate students from the key disciplinary areas, and invited external participants with total numbers capped at around 50. The first part of the day will feature contributions by external stakeholders/participants, presenting existing projects or exploratory planning for future projects in their institutions or companies, around the intersection of IT, museums and visitor experiences. The second part of the day features 4 x workshops, with participants representing the full variety of disciplines exploring ideas around key questions (TBC) to promote new and innovative thinking, trying practical exercises and experimenting with technological tools that advance the theme of Museum Futures. The day concludes with reporting back of individual workshop outcomes to the whole group, and group reflection on future directions.

Suggested event period: in a time to be confirmed with all participants, potentially between 1 August and 19 September, possibly on a Friday.

Proposed timetable:

Morning presentations:

9.30am Assemble at IPMoA, seated presentation in MFR

10am Welcome and introduction to project.

Case study presentations by external participants (K.E., MV, NGV, etc), no more than 6, total 10 mins each.

Lunch (provided by Potter), MFR, 12.30-1.30pm

Afternoon workshops: 1.30-3.00

1.30-3.00pm. 4 workshops x 1.5 hours held across IPMoA (Mezzanine, MFR, Board Room, Study Room). Include representation from all disciplines, and mix of students and academics in each group. Exact format to be devised, on advice of Stanislav Roudavski who has run this type of workshop before. Similar concept to MuseumNext 2014 example, Design Thinking Framework, http://www.museumnext.org/fringe/ and http://mw2013.museumsandtheweb.com/paper/design-thinking/

3-4pm. MFR Reporting back to whole group from each workshop. Group identification of key ideas that could be consolidated into future projects (small or large scale). Possible panel discussion (depending on whether external participants are still in attendance in afternoon session.
