They hold about 1 billion people worldwide. They lack sufficient space and personal safety as well as clean water and appropriate sanitation. The most deprived slums are located in places in some parts of Africa, Pakistan, India, and Mexico. And some of these problems lie right here in America. As some of our nation's metropolitan areas keep growing, 
the sprawling suburbs can come with all sorts of problems; endless commutes, growing pollution, ect. just to name a few.
