Kush gained most of it's power by it's wealth, obtained by it's trading prowess. In addition to it's ready access to a large amount of iron, and location, this made it a powerhouse.

Kush, having most of it's culture influenced by the Egyptians, was also a hub for culture. It had complex traditions that were influenced by the people that would go to the city for trade.

Lastly, Kush was clearly a center of trade, it being what lead to it's power and culture. Kush had direct access to the Nile, allowing it to move large quantities of good fast via boat, making it ideal for trade. Kush also had large amounts of gold,copper, and iron that it could export and trade with, leading to it's power.
