Abstract:

Encouraging students to actively participate in whole-class discussions is vital for effective learning. During my practicum, I noticed that students often hesitated or even refused to answer questions. This prompted me to explore the issue more deeply from multiple perspectives. I conducted micro-teaching sessions, reflected on my own teaching practices, interviewed my student colleagues, and invited my teacher to observe one of my lessons. Analyzing the data proved to be an eye-opening experience. Based on my findings, I have now developed an action plan that I will implement during my practicum next month. In this presentation, I will share the findings from the exploratory stage and outline the strategies I plan to use to foster active participation in my lessons.

I asked, "Why didn’t you answer the questions I asked during class?"

One student said she didn’t answer because she felt shy and lacked enough vocabulary. The other student explained that she just didn’t want to answer. After listening to them, I realized that I didn’t consider their interests or level of knowledge when preparing the questions.

This experience helped me understand how important it is to create a safe and comfortable environment for students. I also learned that questions should match their level of knowledge and skills. Now, I see how curious and engaged my students can be when questions are asked in a way that encourages them.

I was looking for reasons why students wouldn't answer when I asked them questions.

I asked them interesting questions to get them to answer as much as I could. I asked students a lot of interesting questions during the class while they were doing the assignments, testing how they would answer the questions I asked them.

In the first activity, I asked them warm-up questions. Everyone was interested and answered the questions.

Then in the second activity, I gave a text and asked a few discussion questions about it, but not all students answered the questions.

So I realized that I had to ask the students as interesting questions as possible, and when I asked the questions individually, I found that they answered the questions.

I aim to encourage students to respond more actively and confidently during class discussions.

At the beginning of the practicum, I observed my mentor for 2 weeks and learned a lot of information. I taught 1st graders for the following 2 weeks. They are very keen on gaining new knowledge, that's why I enjoyed the classes and didn't experience any difficulties in teaching. They learned every lesson quickly. But the challenge I had was with the students from the upper grades. When I taught them, they didn't listen to anything during the lesson and were mainly busy with their phones. When I asked a question, no one answered, and this affected me greatly. I was shocked by this situation. This is how my 1-month practicum period has come to an end.

Even though there were some difficulties during the research, I learned a lot of useful things. For example, I found out how to make students interested in the lesson and how to keep their attention. I also gained knowledge from the EAR and advice from my teachers during this research, which I will use to become a good teacher in the future.
