Context
In this quote, Elizabeth in the one who is willing to investigate Mr. Hooper's black veil, after everyone else's fear had stopped them from investigating.
Plot
This quote furthers the story's plot by depicting Elizabeth as the only one who is willing to discover the truth. This is significant because it demonstrates who brave Elizabeth is compared to the other townspeople.
-Andrew Streng

Context:
In this quote, Mr. Hooper was laying on his deathbed when the minister tried to take off his veil; his hands shot out and he sat up saying to everyone that they should not just shudder or shiver at him but also at everyone around them.
Plot:
The quote ends the story by allowing Mr. Hooper to say his last words and teach everyone a lesson. Before he falls back down onto his bed he is able to teach everyone that no one is without sin. This adds to the symbol of darkness that the veil represents because it shows the audience at his death that everyone has a "Black Veil".
-Thomas Vu

"Know, then, this veil is a type and a symbol, and I am bound to wear it ever, both in light and darkness, in solitude and before the gaze of multitudes, and as with strangers, so with my familiar friends." (Hawthorne, p.310)
