2.   The breakup- Nikki encouraged unsafe behavior, Murdoch told her to stop. Broke up and Nikki returned to her normal self. few weeks later Nikki takes them on a big day and puts there life in danger.
3.   Damage- Nikki finds another guy and has him beat up Murdoch. Has that guy beat her up and tells police Murdoch did it. Nikki notices Julie, thinking she's dating Murdoch she runs her off the road into an accident that causes her to be paralyzed.
4. Help comes- Nikki loses custody of all of them, they all go to live wit Ben, Matt decides to stay with aunt Bobbie in case.
5. Tantrum- Matt picks up Emma from school, she has a tantrum, Matt tells her off. next week Matt comes late but Emma isn't there. an amber alert is put out and a warrant for Nikki's arrest. she isn't found for 3 days until Matt gets a call at 2 am from Emmy. Matt figures out where she is and saves her. His mom finds him and almost kills her but Murdoch comes before he does.

This book has no specific time period yet it is over the span of 3 years. It then skips 2 years as a "see where they are now" moment. Werlin published The Rules of Survival in 2006. The Rules of survival is an Edgar Award wining book and was an RI teen book award nominee in 2008. This book gets dark at times but its realistic, this type of things happen. Allusion - "... we slipped out a window onto the back deck, climbed down the fire escape, and went one block over to the Cumberland Farms store."(Werlin, 2).
Explain: Cumberland Farms is a real place there is 2 in westerly. The book caught me by surprise it made an easy to picture the moment.
2. hyperbole- "You took one look at me and you just exploded."(Werlin, 223).
Explain: She did not actually explode, but she threw a tantrum.
3. Imagery- "And all at once, we were on the wrong side of the road, heading directly into oncoming traffic. Headlights glared straight into my eyes."(Werlin, 58).
Explain: Knowing that the headlights are shining in his eyes and feeling what that's like its easy to imagine you in that car.

Flight is a novel about this Indian foster boy thinking on a decision for a long time and realizing the struggles of other peoples lives. after thinking he sees things about his family that he had to deal with that are terrible.
