After reviewing Better School counselors, Better Outcomes, it has been proven that although teachers are vital elements to the success of students' cognitive achievement, school counselors assist in areas other than curriculum. School counselors greatly influence college readiness by direct exchange and providing information beyond the classroom. This particular article provided profuse quantitative data proving that it is not the number of students per counselor that is more or less effective but the measure of modest interaction. Career interventions that do not involve school counselors (computerized career advising systems) are much less effective than counselor-led groups, workshops, and classes. When a comprehensive developmental school counseling program is available, students perform better on both national and state examinations of academic knowledge and accomplishment.

School Counselor Competency Assessment Reflection

· Mindsets: Personally, I feel that every student can learn and be competent to succeed educationally, mentally, emotionally and develop skills to be successfully professionally as well. As they embark on these wellness journeys, I feel the pupil should be supported not only by their school counselor but their families, school administration and community. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I agree that every student should graduate from high school because sometimes circumstances are far greater than a high school graduation. However, if there are no hinderances – a high school diploma should be the goal to assist with whatever path is taken next. I feel my role as a school counselor is to help the student / pupil succeed and feel valid versus developing a false pretense that postsecondary school is an “..end all, be all..” measure of success; pressuring them to attend postsecondary school where they may accumulate debt. I agree that comprehensive school counseling programs promote and enhance student academic, career and social/emotional outcomes.

· Behaviors: Professional Foundation: Having the ability to understand and demonstrate the foundational tools as school counselor are essential to the success of not only the counselor but for the pupil as well. It provides a measure of protection and guideline for the two. School counselors should be willing to learn new styles, stay abreast of changes within the bylaws and always advocate for student success.

· Behaviors: Direct and Indirect Student Services: Providing adequate school ready materials to meet the requirements of each individual. I'd like to be able to provide constructive feedback to each student, allowing them to better understand their abilities, values, and career interests. As a school counselor, I want to provide a welcome, pleasant, and safe environment for each student in order to provide comfort during times of crisis. For their achievements and success, I will consult and collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, and other school employees.

· Behaviors: Planning and Assessment: With this criteria in mind, I'd like to devise a strategy that not only supports the school's objective but also aligns with the student's. I'd also like to create and implement action plans that result in positive outcomes. I will be able to aid in bridging the disparities in achievement, attendance, discipline, opportunity, and resources using research and evidence-based action plans.

After receiving the results of the tests, I see that there is a significant preferential difference within the age demographic. The results show that the younger respondents are strongly biased in one way over another no matter the type of test. When considering these results and the relationship with Social Change and its effects, the connection is strong. For example, cyberbullying, about 37% of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 have been bullied online. 30% have had it happen more than once. Cyberbullying has become a serious concern as kids and young people spend more time online. The fact that abusers hide behind screens has no bearing on the consequences of cyberbullying for those who are affected. Teens agree that cyberbullying is a serious issue, but many believe that those in power are not doing enough to solve it. For school counselors, providing support and possible resolutions have come in many ways. Especially seeing that the numbers have increased during the current pandemic. Issuing a screen time, suggesting more time to “unplug”, becoming more active and becoming comfortable with telling an adult are all methods to decrease cyberbullying and increase social change in that area.

When looking at the results and considering other facets in social change, the percentages of the older aged respondents show that they are not as biased towards one option over another. In my opinion, as we age, our past experiences form our thoughts to be more optimistic about our futures and accepting of change. But I also believe we all have prejudices and unconscious biases in our minds based on our interactions with a particular set of individuals or experiences. School counselors or counselors in general can use this data and research to help depict the different methods to create better social change. This step in the research process is critical for knowing their goals and preferences so that one can create learning material that is essential to their students / clients.

I believe that as things change, policies will change as well, and that we will never be as well informed as we would like. However, it is necessary to remain vigilant. Understanding the topic under mindsets shows that I am well-versed in the subject.
