For the first step on my project I made a mindmap of words linked to a more focused word ‘revolve’ rather than revolving. I thought that thinking of all of these words could help me figure out how I would like to approach this project. My favourite words I came up with were ‘spiralling’ and ‘circulate’

I knew I wanted to focus my project on the specialist area ‘interior design’ and I thought that the word ‘spiralling’ would be interesting and have relevance to something like a spiral staircase. I decided to make a collage of images I found on Pinterest. All of these think to spiralling in some form.

Experimenting with paper forms

I made this twisted star piece from paper and used a blue and pink light to photograph it, it creates a contrast and makes the image look like some sort of illusion. I liked how flexible paper is and I tried out some spiralling forms and eventually came up with this.

Trying Origami

I wanted to try a different approach instead of just twisting paper. I tried a technique called 'Origami'. I watched a video on how to make it and used one sheet of paper and folded it many times to create this crane. The use of white and blue lighting that i photographed it with highlights the folds and adds depth.

This one i did not like because it doesn't have the same effect and the colour is blotchy but the paper spirals can be seen more easily.

I also photographed this piece in other lighting to see if it made any difference. I like the fade from dark to light pink however i think it did not photograph as well.

Enhancing and editing photos

This piece was a random idea of combining paper loops which turned out to look flower like. I only used blue lighting when taking a photo but dramatically increased the filters when editing it. I really like this one especially due to the shadowing and bright colour it enhances the image.

Cutting out images on photoshop

I used a few photos i have taken to experiment with graphics on photoshop. I took the main object from the image with the magic wand tool to cut it out and tried different graphics with them.

I chose these images as they are all a bit different and I could play around with the fx effects and change the filters on each. I like how i can layer the images as some of the filters have a more see through effect.

This was another version i did without cutting my first image out. lnstead i overlapped the images and turned down the opacity so both images can be seen. I think that this would be a good way to make something look like something else and complicating the visuals.

Using the magic wand tool i cut out my first picture of my dog and then pasted in another picture of some fish into my first image. I thought that there could be a way of combining them. I turned down the opacity of the picture of the fish so my dog was still visible creating an odd but exciting image.

I chose a flag as part of revolution but instead of just using its normal colours I switched it up a bit. I chose the Greek flag and thought of other colours I could use but also what I could add with materials and textures. I didn’t want to add to much but i thought straws were an interesting material to use. I thought that changing the colours would be interesting as they have meaning and they are important in the greek flag but without those colours what does it mean?

I used the website 'Canva' to create some AI pictures, I used some words from my revolve mind map to generate these ideas. I wanted to see what outcomes could be made from these words, after seeing how easy it is to generate these images I think AI is an unrealistic way of art and I wouldn’t trust it. I also tried to use interior design or spiral staircase in these aswell.

I actually really like how this turned out, these are some drawings I did from photos I had taken and used image trace in black and white. The outlines are a dark black and just looks like a pen drawing but it has picked up a lot of detail.

This didn’t go to plan how I expected it to but I wanted to add some colour, I used a brush pen to add to the drawing like art but it was hard to colour in the detail like I normally would.

Another way of working in illustrator is with shapes and when making something from scratch I find it easier to do this, the first thing I thought of was a turtle which I thought would be a test as it has a unique shape for its fins.

This was my first attempt at doing digital spirals I just tried out a few things such as a spiral staircase which didn’t look so good in 2D, as for others I thought of a tornado spiral and a flowery one. I prefer the flower one as it’s more full. I think I could expand on this later on.

The second character I chose was this lamp, I liked how much detail this one had. It was a bit more tricky to make and the face didn’t turn out how I would’ve liked but I had to try my best do do what I could with the tools I had.

As part of college my class went on a trip to the Whitechapel art gallery in London. This was the Peter Kennard section of the gallery where all of his work was displayed. I found his work very different and some parts did link to the theme of revolution however I didn’t find much inspiration from this artist.

This part of the gallery was Lygia Clark and Sonia Boyce I especially liked their work, Lygia Clarks work didn’t look like much but her pieces had deeper meaning. I quite liked how she used aluminium pieces to create them. As for Sonia Boyce she repeatedly used a photo of someone and from a far it looked like a trippy pattern almost like illusions.

I tried to make a response to Bridget Riley’s work however it was a lot harder than I thought, I won’t be including this kind of intense illusion within my final piece. I made this on adobe illustrator by just using lines and this style just isn’t for me.

I took inspiration from the Lygia Clark pieces I saw and I wanted to see if I could include it into my work somehow. I thought that linking my staircase ideas could work. I didn’t have any solid aluminium to use so I wrapped cardboard pieces in aluminium foil instead which worked just as well.

Sculpture with wooden sticks

I wanted to see what materials I could use to create some sort of spiralling piece. I thought that wooden sticks would work well and started to play around with them. I tried stacking them at different angles which turned out to make a spiral cylinder which then lead into a table.

Starting final piece - Designing the walls

I originally was going to make final design ideas however i felt that I needed to focus on getting my final piece done. I also wasn’t sure how I would go about it so I didn’t want to waste time. I knew which parts of my experimentation i wanted to use in my final piece so I just went straight into it, one of them being the spirals i created digitally. I decided to use a pen to create the spirals with a spirograph for some variation.

I filled an A4 page with these so it would roughly cover the walls.

I then scanned this spiral sheet into procreate and added to the walls. I used the warping mesh to fit it exactly into the template i had drawn out.

I wanted to use my own work in my final piece and made a purple check print to add for the flooring. I chose purple so i had as many colours in my work as possible.

I looked back through my work and saw all of the illusion work I had done, then I came up with the idea of the spiralling and thought this would be perfect for the ceiling, I chose another bright colour to do this with.

When designing my final piece, I used an app called Procreate. I used the layout for one point perspective to make the room and drew it out.

I wasn't to sure at first of what to do on the ceiling as i didnt want to leave it white. I made a dublicate of the floor and added it to the ceiling but I didn’t look right to me so I kept thinking.

I started to explore more into the spiralling theme and thought that illusions would be a cool style to experiment with. From the research I had done so far I decided to focus on interior design rather than architecture
